Volunteers are needed to assist with clothing donations and serving meals at Pinellas Safe Harbor, a homeless shelter in Clearwater, FL in honor of Martin Luther King Day. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service - a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.
Pinellas Safe Harbor is a homeless shelter designed to be a safe haven for those currently homeless and who require service to get back on their feet. "The Harbor" came into being as a result of a series of partnerships involving the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the City of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County Government, and numerous homeless service providers in Pinellas County. This group saw the need to better serve the chronically homeless, kep them out of the county jail and the criminal justice system, and give them the necessary tools to redirect their lives.
