Central Kitchen Support – Volunteers needed
Meals on Wheels People (formerly Loaves and Fishes Centers) has provided hot nutritious meals to seniors in the Portland metropolitan area since 1970. Last year over 1 million meals were served to seniors!
We have over 9800 volunteers a year who support our efforts making up 98% of our workforce… only 125 are paid staff. Meals on Wheels People would cease to exist if we lost the incredible support of our volunteer base.
Working in our Central Kitchen you will serve a critical role to ensure seniors in our community receive a hot, healthy and nutritious meal every weekday. We prepare over 5,000 meals each weekday in our state-of-the-art production kitchen in SW Portland.
We have a variety of activities that you may be assigned to including: pre-plating meals, filling food items into hot meal trays or cold packs, salad prep, bakery assistance, packaging/labeling food for distribution to our 35 dining centers, dishwashing, stocking items in the pantry, cleaning/sanitizing work areas/floors, etc.
We are seeking individuals or groups who can begin between 7am/8am for a four hour shift and commit to helping us once a week on Thursday or Friday. A commitment of at least 3 months would be great.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 18 years old minimum
- Reliable self-starter, arrives on time as scheduled and works swiftly
- Able to work well with others in a team-oriented atmosphere with diverse groups
- Able to perform multiple repetitive movements with speed and accuracy
- Must be clean and appropriately dressed (no shorts or open toe shoes)
- Able to lift 25lbs and stand/walk for the entire shift
