African Voices seeks individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit to help build on its successful 24 year history. We are looking to expand our Board of Directors and create a team dedicated to the organization's growth and mission. The organization is seeking passionate and committed Board members who have a love for the arts and strong background in business development and finance. The organization is two-year into a 5-year strategic plan to build capacity. Board members with previous experience in serving on a non-profit board are encouraged to apply. The Board meets three times a year.

African Voices Communications is a non-profit cultural arts organization dedicated to fostering cultural understanding through literature, art, and film. African Voices receives city, state and city funding as well as enjoying support from private donors. The organization serves NYC's vibrant arts community through the following public programs: African Voices, a literary magazine for emerging artists; Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series, a film festival dedicated to providing opportunities for women of color filmmakers; and Get Your Read On! (GYRO!), a literacy program that uses the arts to build young people's reading, writing and oratory skills.

Your responsibilities would include:

  • Building support for the organization and its mission
  • Fundraising (Give or Get)
  • Attending board meetings (in person or via phone/video conferencing)
  • Participating on at least one committee
  • Strategic Planning & Program Development
  • Building Organization's Endowment Funds

We are looking for people who have the following experience:

  • Fundraisings & Grant writing
  • Accounting/Finance
  • Law (Non-profit and Employment areas)
  • Corporate Giving & Sponsorship
  • Marketing, Communications, and Social Media
  • Public Relations and Community Outreach
  • Non-profit Development
  • Program Development
  • Arts Education
