Volunteer Opportunity description

HWB (Humanity Without Borders). is a public, Non Government Organization (NGO) based all over the World with its offices in USA Asia and Africa.

We are group of Volunteers who dedicate ourselves to empower vulnerable people stuck in the poverty cycle, regardless of gender, race, creed or political beliefs in the poorest regions of the world, through the design and implementation of effective programs with meaningful impact, using three key strategies: the power of Communities, the energy of Volunteers and equity of Donors.

Volunteers will be responsible for teaching the children with a focus on English and mathematics Art and Craft, social Studies, P.E and Sciences. With the aid of a local translator, volunteers will plan and run lessons for the children.

Additionally, volunteers with musical and computer skills are needed to instruct the children in these areas. After class, volunteers are encouraged to introduce new games and team building ideas, teach the children new songs, languages, involve them in art projects, as well as generally giving them the love and attention they need.

Two days a week volunteers have the opportunity to serve at a local feeding center where meals are provided to the street community; a large percentage of this community are children.

Volunteers from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Please note that this project requires volunteers who are self-starters, who can take part in a flexible schedule, and who can work with minimal supervision. Teaching experience is not required, but volunteers must be prepared to plan lessons and run classes for the children. Volunteers need to be fluent in English and be good with children.

The main areas of volunteering include: teaching and tutoring, extracurricular activities, participation in a feeding program, providing feedback and handover reports.

Volunteer Work Expectation

The following is an example schedule which shows what a volunteer week may look like:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday - Volunteers will teach the children from 9.00am-12.30pm and 2.30pm - 5.00pm. During the lunch break volunteers will prepare for the afternoon lesson.
  • Thursday and Tuesday - Volunteers will work in the community feeding program for 2 -3 hours. The rest of the day can either be spent organizing games for the children or free time for the volunteers.
  • Weekends - Free time for travel/sightseeing.

Accommodation

Volunteers will live onsite at the children's home with the program director's family or with volunteer hosts. There are sporadic electricity outages in in most of this Areas Some running water is available. Buckets will be provided for showers and washing clothes.

The bathroom has a western style toilet, and a tub for taking bucket showers.

Meals and Food

Volunteers will be served three meals per day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Breakfast is generally tea or coffee, some sort of oatmeal or bread, and sometimes eggs. Lunch consists of a revolving menu of rice, pasta, or soup, and when the kids come home from school they generally have a snack, including fruit, which the volunteers may also have. The evening meal usually consists of a traditional dish or meal of the day

Free Time

Volunteers will be required to work between 4 to 5 hours per day. Weekends and holidays are free time. Volunteers are free to do as they please on the weekends and after their daily volunteer duties are done for the day. We encourage volunteers to see as much of the country as possible since there is a lot to see and do.

When you are not working on your specific volunteer project you could use your time to prepare for the next day, we also strongly encourage you to participate in other aspects of the program. HWB encourages you to be proactive in your approach to the volunteer experience; ask your program director what you can do to setup a new idea or foster an ongoing side project.

Communication

Keeping in touch by post, telephone and email is generally easy, but not always reliable.

The volunteer house has a land line that accepts incoming phone calls only.

In the city there are phone booths and telecommunications centers, the latter being the place to make international calls.

Internet cafes are available in the main towns, however it is quite slow. . There is internet access available in the volunteer house for a set rate.

Number of Volunteers

The program usually has between 1- 3 volunteers per month, but the number of volunteers varies depending on the season. Please note that due to variation in volunteer numbers, we are unable to guarantee that you will be placed with another volunteer until closer to your placement start date.
