Volunteer Opportunity description

Worldreader is an exciting international (US, Barcelona, and Africa) social enterprise whose mission is to spread the benefits of literacy by providing digital books "to all in the developing world". We have to date provided 10,000 children and their families with over 400,000 e-books across sub-Saharan Africa, and we provide over 400,000 people with e-books across Asia, India, and Africa via a new Mobile initiative.

We are growing fast, and we are looking for an accomplished volunteer to represent our interests to an audience of potential supporters in the New York City and/or the Washington, DC metropolitan areas.

This volunteer "rep" will work closely with Worldreader's Development and Executive staff to cultivate existing and prospective relationships with foundations, NGOs, other organizations, and major donors, in order to achieve funding support or operational collaboration, or both.

Activities will include:

  • learning about the impact that Worldreader's programs can have on literacy, health & welfare, and social well being
  • networking with existing Worldreader contacts and supporters
  • finding new potential Worldreader contacts and supporters
  • meeting (both one-on-one and in group settings) with interested parties
  • presenting the Worldreader story
  • accessing contact information, and placing contact reports in Worldreader's online constituent-tracking database
  • scheduling follow-up meetings with senior Worldreader staff and executives from San Francisco/Seattle, Barcelona, and Africa who will travel to NYC/DC to deepen the relationships that were created by the rep

There is also the potential opportunity to help organize or help facilitate Worldreader events on the East Coast, ranging from speaking engagements for Worldreader executives and staff, to salons and dinner parties hosted by Worldreader supporters, but this would be considered a "plus" to the core activities outlined above.

The scope and responsibilities of the position, and its potential contribution to Worldreader's mission, will be limited only by the time, talent, and seniority of the representative.

Candidates must have a working knowledge of development and non-profit administration and they must be in the position to contribute 10-15 hours per week or more.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Non-Profit Administration, Public Policy, or related disciplines, with a minimum of two years of professional experience; Masters or PhD candidates a significant plus
  • Ability to call upon your own existing network, Worldreader's existing network, or to cultivate a new network, of East Coast foundations, NGOs, and/or prospective individual donors
  • Great analytical and project management skills, as well as exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Practical experience in event planning, especially in the not-for-profit context, a plus
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in other languages is a plus
  • Demonstrable passion for Worldreader's mission

This position will be performed remotely. However, candidates must be within driving distance of New York City or the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Successful volunteers will be assigned increased responsibilities.
