The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts is New England's largest AIDS Service Organization. The agency works with people living with HIV/AIDS to provide services, education, advocacy and prevention information. The Check-In Program is one of the programs within the Client Services Department that is responsible for reaching out and keeping in phone and mail contact with clients of the agency. Check-In volunteers provide information and referrals, along with a sensitive and caring ear, to AIDS Action Committee's clients, and help maintain a strong connection between clients and staff members.
The Check-In Volunteer position is demanding, challenging and immensely rewarding. It requires excellent listening skills, compassion, patience and the ability to talk with people from all walks of life. All of our volunteers are asked to be compassionate and non-judgmental as well as sensitive to HIV-related issues. Volunteers should be prepared to deal with ongoing life issues, losses, challenges and triumphs. Crisis management, hotline or counseling experience is always welcome, but not necessary.
The Check-In program requires its volunteers to make at least a one year commitment of one shift per week on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening from approximately 6-9pm.
To apply: There is a multi-step application and training process to ensure this program is the right fit for each volunteer. We will be having our next training on Saturday, February 9th and Sunday, February 10th from 9-5. In order to begin this process, please submit a resume to Stephanie Larson, Check-In Program Coordinator, at slarson@aac.org.
