National Service Opportunities
Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is anticipating hosting AmeriCorps members for the 2013-2014 program years and continuing to be a part of the dynamic national service movement sweeping our nation. HFHI, in partnership with our Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the U.S. and The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), will be providing qualified and selected individuals the opportunity to participate in national service projects which are in-direct service opportunities called – AmeriCorps VISTA, and is anticipating hosting direct service opportunities called – AmeriCorps National. Both of these types of opportunities assist Habitat for Humanity affiliates to build their capacity and engage communities, as well as, increase and lead volunteers and build and renovate homes in partnership with low-income families in need of safe and decent housing. We anticipate opportunities across the U.S., in various states and locations.
AmeriCorps VISTA
The AmeriCorps VISTA program provides members opportunities to develop new and creative efforts that focus on permanent, long-range solutions to poverty, rather than short-term approaches for emergency needs. In partnership with Habitat for Humanity affiliates, AmeriCorps VISTA members develop systems, programs and procedures to enhance affiliate capacity-building efforts. Members focus on sustainability, clear project goals and accountability to alleviate poverty, generate resources and encourage volunteer service.
Program Benefits AmeriCorps VISTA members receive countless benefits: a living allowance of no less than $833 per month, personal and sick leave, health care coverage, workers compensation and child care assistance (if eligible). Members also receive federal loan forbearance on qualified student loans and payment of interest accrued on qualified loans. After completing 12 months of service, members may be eligible for an education award or a stipend. At the end of service, members also receive noncompetitive status for federal employment.
Terms of Service
One year of full-time service (35–40 hours per week). Members may serve up to five years.
VISTA members are prohibited from working a second job while in service.
AmeriCorps National
AmeriCorps National service opportunities provide a unique human resource to affiliates—motivated, passionate, hard-working volunteers who can address community needs in a variety of ways. Members from diverse backgrounds and abilities build and renovate houses with low-income families and strengthen communities by enabling Habitat affiliates to utilize volunteers more effectively.
