Interested in helping out in our community? Our area has an average low literacy rate of 11%, which is about 1 out of every 10 people. We are in need of volunteers to help these adults with literacy (reading, writing, comprehension) so they can pursue employment, more enriching day-to-day activities, reading to their children, and/or greater self-esteem. We can definitely work with your busy schedule so please consider volunteering!
Position Description:
Volunteer tutors with GoodSkills Literacy Corps will tutor one or more participants in basic literacy, numeracy, and/or basic computing skills. Volunteer tutors will meet with their participant(s) twice a week per participant (or less, depending on participant's choice of pace). Each session will be at least an hour long (unless there is a no-show or the participant has to leave early for an unforeseen reason).
The locations of the tutoring sessions may be determined by the volunteer tutor and the participant. Volunteer tutors agree to be on time to the sessions. For reasons of safety, liability, and personal boundaries, volunteer tutors are discouraged from giving rides to participants. Volunteer tutors will not share private information about participants without written consent.
Volunteer tutors commit to tutor with GoodSkills Literacy Corps for a minimum of six months. All tutoring hours must be tracked through the case notes document and reported to the appropriate AmeriCorps Mentor on a monthly basis.
