Volunteer Opportunity description

Interested in volunteering for Kings County Tennis League? You don't need to know how to play tennis to get involved!!

Our classes are Saturdays from 12:30-3:30pm beginning May 4, 2012. We have 4 sites: Marcy Tennis Club, Tompkins Tennis Club, Lafayette Gardens Tennis Club and Sumner Tennis Club.

We will have two on-court training sessions in April that will give anyone with a positive attitude the tools necessary to use tennis as a means for positive mentorship. There are also regular scheduled volunteer meet ups for free indoor tennis throughout the winter so sign up today!!

Once the season kicks off in May, volunteers will teach tennis to children living in each of the four public housing developments listed above. You toss tennis balls, give ouy high fives, and communicate with the students. Basically, you serve as a positive role model they look forward to meeting each Saturday. As the season progresses, we interject educational components to class: healthy eating, vocabulary, and community service. The season ends with a neighborhood tennis tournament/jamboree where all four housing communities come together to celebrate.

Volunteers will need to fill out a KCTL registration form. Volunteers will receive a KCTL Jersey, free racket stringing, and invites to our events as a thanks for all your hard work.

Thanks for your interest in the Kings County Tennis League! We look forward to seeing you on the courts.

Our Mission is to use tennis as an instrument for mentorship and community building in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. We literally bring tennis to the children's communities.

We positively mentor our students by:

  • creating a competitive environment centered on positive comunication
  • incorporating life skills training into each class
  • giving out take home literature to students
  • inviting role models to speak
  • providing healthy eating alternatives during class

We build the community by:

  • partnering with local non profits
  • raising funds for capital and beautification projects
  • working with local designers and artists to build the program
  • giving local highschool students and residents the opportunity to volunteer
