The AHS – an Atlanta pet adoption center with a proven track record of helping the city's homeless, abused, and neglected animals – offers many additional public-wide services, including Canine Play Yards for potential adopters, spaying and neutering, dog training and educational programs, and a veterinary clinic. And, of course, unlike many other animal shelters around the country, the AHS never euthanizes because of space or time constraints. Every service or program at our animal charity is made possible by generous contributions to our many animal welfare charities and yearly fundraisers from the community.
The AHS foster care program places special needs animals into warm, nurturing environments that can provide consistent care. Volunteers are needed to care for not-quite-adoptable (too young, too old, unsocialized, or treatably ill) animals' in your home until they can be placed for adoption. Must be at least 18 years of age, and have a home set-up that will facilitate special-needs animals. A home check is required.
To join the foster pets program, you will need to meet with our Foster Care Coordinator to see what kind of animals you would be suited to foster and to answer any questions you might have. There's a short application to fill out, and at some point, a home check is required by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Periodic emails are sent to Foster Parents to let everyone know what dogs and cats need fostering. You will be added to the list and, if you see an animal you would be interested in fostering, just reply to the email!
If you think this is something you would like to pursue, please contact Julie Cortino for the Atlanta campus. If you have specific questions, feel free to email at the following: fostercare@atlantahumane.org. If you're unable to foster pets in your home, please consider donating to help others become a loving foster to pets in the Alpharetta or Atlanta, GA area.
