We are a charitable school based in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, and we strive to offer free quality education to our 225 children, from Lower Kindergarten to Class 7. All of our children are from very poor households, and there is no other school in our area that offers 'quality' education. Most of our children come from homes where their parents are either poorly educated or illiterate. Therefore, we are looking for teachers who can teach in an activity based manner and use creative methods to engage our children in their learning process. We are also seeking individuals who are willing to train our current teachers in such inovative methods. Teachers will be asked to teach with the local teachers so the latter can learn the methods of teaching first hand from the foriegn teacher. In exchange for a one year committment, we can pay a small stipend for your services, and we can offer free accomodation and food. However, perhaps the greatest asset we have is the sheer beauty of our area and the rich cultural experience you will enjoy while living in a tribal community. Every volunteer who has spent time with our children and lived in our village has been welcomed and made to feel at home by the local people, who are warm, loving and humble. This is a wonderful chance to know the true meaning of 'education' as our children are so thirsty for knowledge. It is perhaps one of the most gratifying experiences for a teacher. About our Area:
Our school is located in the Indian Himalaya. We live in a tribal block called Jaunpur which has its own unique tribal practices. The school and our host village of Sainji are just 45 minutes by local jeep or bus from the famous hill station of Mussoorie (established by the British in the 1700s). The scenery is spectacular and the culture is extemely rich and vibrant.
