Interested in joining the Board of Directors of an

Arts & Culture Non Profit in Chicago?

Receive comprehensive training and matching assistance through the Arts & Business Council's On BOARD Program!

The deadline to apply is August 1, 2013.

Successful candidates will have one or more well-developed areas of professional expertise and a passion for supporting and sustaining the arts and culture sector of Chicago. No experience in arts management is required to participate in On BOARD.

What is the On BOARD® Program?

• New board member training and matching program • Offered each year in the spring and fall (February-June/September-January) since 1999 • Trains business professionals on effective board membership/participation • Matches successful candidates with the board of nonprofit arts organization in the metro Chicago area according to artistic interests & skills background

How does On BOARD® Work?

Participants will:

• Attend 5 half-day sessions conducted by board governance experts, non-profit arts leaders & current board members • Receive extensive training through interactive coursework in:

  • Organization Structure
  • Legal & Fiduciary Responsibilities
  • Nonprofit Finances
  • Fundraising & Development
  • Executive Leadership & Committees

• Participate in determining their ideal board match • Be elected to the Board of Directors of a non-profit arts organization

On BOARD Fall 2013 Course Dates:

Meet the Arts Organizations: Tuesday Sept 17 & 24 - 5:30-8:00pm

Training Sessions: Saturdays Sept 14, Oct 19, Nov 16, Dec 7 - 9:00am-2:00pm; Thursday, Jan 16 4:30-8:00pm

Who Should Apply:

On BOARD® Criteria and Costs

• At least 8-10 years of work experience • Willingness & ability to dedicate time • Willingness & ability to make significant contribution to arts organization served • Appreciation & passion for the arts • Tuition is $2,000 per participant*

  • Many companies sponsor one or more candidates per year because they recognize board service as a professional opportunity and a great way to gain visibility in the community. A limited number of scholarships are available to candidates from the civic and nonprofit sectors and those who are unable to gain sponsorship through their employers. Please contact the Arts & Business Council for more information.

Participants typically have expertise in at least one of the following: Strategy, Finance, Marketing, Public Relations, Human Resources, Law, Accounting, Organizational Development, Leadership & Training, Project Management, Fundraising, Nonprofit Management, Technology/IT, Business Planning, Sales
