Volunteer Opportunity description

The Harlem YMCA (part of the YMCA of Greater New York), which serves New York City's extraordinarily diverse population, is seeking energetic and disciplined ADMINISTRATIVE/ CASE MANAGEMENT volunteer for our New Americans Welcome Center program. The New Americans Welcome center serves immigrants and refugees from across New York City, and offers ESL, Ctizenship, Job Readiness/Computer classes, as well as counseling and referrals.

Administrative/Case Management volunteers will assist the Program Counselor with clients/students in the capacity of immigration, employment, health care, education referrals, registration and assessments, and basic counseling. The opportunity will provide experience navigating the expansive network of community service organizations in New York City.

Proficiency in Spanish, French, Arabic, and/or other languages required to successfully assist the populations we serve.

We seek volunteers who can commit to at least three hours a week for a 12-week period. Available times: Monday-Friday 10am-1pm, 2pm-5pm and/or 6pm-9pm.

REQUIREMENTS Uphold and model the YMCA core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring. Show creativity and patience in working with adults with varying degrees of English proficiency. Must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish, French, Arabic and/or other languages is preferred. Previous teaching experience is a plus, but not required.

ABOUT US The New Americans Welcome Centers serve as multilingual information resources and referral centers, and provide immigrant families with a wide array of free instructional, vocational, recreational, family support, and human services. Classes offered include English as a Second Language, GED Preparation, Citizenship Preparation, Computer Literacy and Job Readiness.
