The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program is seeking volunteers (age 50+) to tutor in the Pittsburgh and Woodland Hill School districts. The OASIS program promotes literacy with a proven approach to help children in grades K-4 read at grade level. No teaching experience is required and all training, materials and clearances are provided free of charge. Training sessions are offered throughout the year. The goals of the OASIS program are to: promote motivation, success and enjoyment of reading, composition and oral communications with elementary students; increase the confidence and self-esteem of students participating in the program; offer meaningful volunteer opportunities for mature adults; and strengthen ties between generations by providing opportunities for mature adults and young children to develop friendships, understanding and trust. Tutoring sessions are held outside the classroom during school hours at a day, time and place to be arranged by teacher and tutor. For more information contact John D. Spehar, Program Director, on 412 393-7648 or by email at email@example.com.
