Help underserved NYC high school students raise their SAT scores by volunteering on the New York Cares/Kaplan SAT Prep program! New York Cares has teamed up with Kaplan, Inc. to provide free, comprehensive SAT tutoring to low-income students at 40 schools and community centers across the city. As a tutor, you will work with the same group of 2-3 students weekly from October to May to help prepare them for the exam. But this program is about more than increasing test scores. Your commitment to the students you tutor shows them that someone believes they've got what it takes to succeed – and often that's all they need to increase their chances of getting into the college of their choice.
Volunteers are required to attend a two-part training, where they will learn core tutoring skills as well as how to teach SAT studying and test-taking techniques. After completing the training, volunteers can choose a project location and time that's convenient for them. New York Cares/Kaplan SAT Prep projects run from October to May on weekday evenings (usually from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.) or on Saturdays (usually from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) at 40 locations throughout the city.

Before you can volunteer on a New York Cares project, you must attend a 45-minute orientation. After that, you can choose from hundreds of flexibly scheduled volunteer projects every month.
