Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights is a service-based, human rights organization that provides housing, health care, human services, and human rights protections to the most poor and vulnerable people in our society, and uses its 118 years of experience to advocate for social justice.
Heartland Human Care Services' (HHCS) Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) Project provides English as a Second Language instruction, emphasizing language fluency and competencies that are relevant to the daily lives of the adult students served. The AVL project is an essential component of HHCS' Refugee and Immigrant Community Services (RICS) department. ESL classes are held at a RICS site in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood. Volunteers provide classroom, small group, and one-on-one instruction for adult learners.
RICS is currently seeking volunteer ESL teachers.
The volunteer ESL teacher works in a classroom for two full hours. Volunteers are asked to commit to one or more days a week throughout the duration of a 3-month quarter. Volunteer teaching positions are available from 9:00 am - 11:00 am Monday through Friday and 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Monday through Thursday.
The volunteer ESL teacher will be supported by lead teachers (staff) at the site. Lead teachers provide detailed lesson plans and materials. (If volunteers are interested in developing plans and bringing in materials for their class, they are always welcome to do coordinate this with staff.)
Volunteer ESL teachers are expected to inform the lead teacher if they will not be able to attend a class.
