Volunteer Opportunity description

Are you passionate about helping people find careers that make a difference? Consider sharing your insights and advice as a columnist for Idealist Careers. Please note that this is a volunteer opportunity.

About Idealist Careers

Idealist Careers is a publication of Idealist.org. Idealist Careers was launched to help the millions of people who come to Idealist find, land, and love their jobs. Our audience is familiar with the nonprofit sector, has a few years of work experience, and is grappling with how to find the right opportunity, stay passionate, and build long-lasting careers that make a difference.

What we're looking for

Writers are expected to contribute once per month for six months. We're looking for writers to tackle the following categories:

Have an idea for a category not mentioned? We'd love to hear that, too!

How to apply

Want to apply?

Send in one full article (600-800 words) for the category you'd you like to focus on. If you're selected, this will be your first article on Idealist Careers, so it shouldn't be a welcome piece, but rather a helpful, focused piece of writing. Include a short bio (with links to your social media profiles and other writing, if available) and ideas you have for the next five columns.

Send to Allison Jones, Allison@idealist.org with the following subject line: Writer Submission. We're accepting applications on an on-going basis, but the sooner, you apply, the better!

Tips for writing: Our tone is down-to-earth and pragmatic; imagine chatting with a colleague whom you know well and respect. Articles should be actionable, original, and address a specific problem (for example, instead of "How to network" think "How to network in a new city"). Strong pieces are rooted in the writer's experience and offer a new take on a common problem.
