The notoriously under-funded schools of Malawi have a desperate need for teaching help. There are insufficient teachers for the numbers of children who attend, and teaching volunteers in are urgently needed and greatly appreciated.
Placements are available at community schools, where the age of the children ranges from primary to secondary levels. The list of subjects delivered with the help of volunteers includes English, Geography, History, Music, ICT, Mathematics, Science, Arts & Crafts. Volunteers will begin by assisting the local teachers and once comfortable may take some of their own lessons.
Volunteers help teachers by playing music, singing songs, drawing pictures and other creative activities, and are equally encouraged to help develop and take part in extra-curricular activities.
It is important that volunteers are flexible as there are a number of other tasks they can help with. These might include helping children with their homework, cleaning the classroom and assisting teachers with administrative duties.
While it is not a pre-requisite to joining this program, we highly recommend all Teaching and Education volunteers complete the 120 hour TEFL course prior to volunteering.
