At this time Girls Excelling in Math and Science of Prince George's County (GEMS of Prince George's County or GEMS) is recruiting for a Co-Director for the 2012-13 GEMS program. This Co-director will start in April 2013 or as soon as possible and will be able to commit roughly 10 hrs/week until May 2013. Longer term commitment, such as until May 2014, is preferred. Ability to drive and access to a car are preferred. This is a volunteer position for the current school year, with possible compensation for the 2013-14 activity based on the success of our current fundraising program.
Now in its seventh year, GEMS is an after-school enrichment program designed for girls enrolled in Prince George's County middle schools. The curriculum ranges across the sciences with the emphasis on the natural sciences. Outstanding University of Maryland undergraduates serve as GEMS mentors and role models and facilitate the activities. The administrative structure of the program is as follows: A graduate student acts as Associate Director of the program and handles communication with the undergraduate students; three site coordinators are responsible for the activities in the three locations( Tuesdays 4:30-6:00 pm at William Wirt Middle School,Thursdays 3:00-5:00 pm at Buck Lodge MS, Thursdays 4:30-6:00 pm at Nicholas Orem MS). Fusion Partnerships, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization based in Baltimore is the fiscal sponsor of GEMS. GEMS has its own Advisory Board and is working toward becoming an independent 501(c)3 organization.
A listing of the general roles and responsibilities of the Co-Directors is attached. The exact responsibilities of new Co-Director depend on the interests and skills of the person recruited, after discussion with the present Co-Directors.
