Volunteers - Working Holidays South Spain

Sunseed Desert Technology is a non-profit based in the semi-arid region of Almeria in Southern Spain - we have been here for over 26 years. We aim to develop, demonstrate and communicate technologies for low-impact living in semi-arid places. Our organization is fully run by volunteers, including staff and trustees, and we invite volunteers to come from all over the world to participate in activities ranging from working in organic gardens, to designing grey-water systems, to working with alternative technologies such as solar cooking and generating energy through micro-energy systems. We teach about community living and help people get a taste of low-impact living by continually striving to lower our environmental and social foot-print.

We are a friendly international community working in inspiring surroundings, with delicious vegetarian/vegan food and relaxation time. Volunteers make a weekly contribution towards food and accommodation between 85€ and 150€ depending on hours worked and the weeks they are staying.

Short and longer-term volunteers are required year round for working, learning new skills and joining in with communal activities. Volunteers can work in areas such as: Organic Growing, Dryland Regeneration, Appropriate Technology, Eco-Construction and Maintenance, Environmental Education, Sustainable Living, Mycorrhiza Research and more.

During the week we include activities such as:

• educational seminars (on Permaculture, Thermal Mass Stove, Ethics on Food, Soils Fertility, Chemicals on products, etc..),
• specific guided tours of the different departments,
• Spanish lessons,
• solar power documentaries/cinema,
• visits to other projects,
• Open Space for share activities, etc..
• Opportunity to help develop our new invisible learning program, related to informal accrediation and skill-building recognition

Longer-term volunteering is perfect for university placements, dissertations or simply carrying out your own project and gaining experience.

Volunteering and....

When not working we often we organise activities such as: solar powered movie nights, yoga, dancing, etc.. Also in their free time volunteers can enjoy walking around the valley, going to swim in the river, exploring abandoned villages or visiting The Caves, as Sunseed is located in the Protected Natural Park Karsts de Yesos, one of the most important in Europe. It is possible to go to the beach as well, as we are 60km far from the beautiful coast Natural Park Cabo de Gata.
