This program is open to pre-med and med-students and qualified medical practitioners, as well as non-medical persons who have a passion for, or wish to pursue a career in, the field of Healthcare and Medicine.
This is a great learning opportunity but please keep in mind the level of involvement and direct patient care is dependent on your training and particular skills. Initially you will be observing while working alongside and assisting local staff. As you build rapport, and they get a feel for where you're at, they will give you more responsibility/tasks.
Most of the medical projects that we support are government funded local clinical facilities for people who cannot afford private medical care, and are severely understaffed and underfunded, with a lack of vital resources. Therefore volunteers must be aware that this can be a very stressful and challenging environment to work in, though as it is very community-based, this is also a very rewarding project to be a part of, and is set in amazing Cape Town, in the shadow of the majestic Table Mountain.
Working hours on this project are usually Mondays to Fridays from 07:00 to 16:00 (local clinics). Volunteers on this program can expect to be involved in the following duties:
- Wound dressing
- Taking blood pressure, pulse and temperature measurements
- Assisting patients from one service point to another
- Awareness programmes
- Other tasks as required
As with all of our Healthcare and Medical programs it is important that volunteers have relevant skills and are suitable for the role. Other skill requirements are:
- A love and passion for people
- Medical related experience and/or studies in the field
- Patience and empathy
- A willingness to help where help is needed
Volunteers on this program can choose to be accommodated either at the volunteers house, located in central Cape Town, or with a local host family. At the Volunteer House, Breakfast and Dinner are provided Monday to Friday only. Volunteers are responsible for their own lunches and meals over weekends as well as their own laundry. Homestay's are all located within walking distance from their project. At the homestay, 3 meals are provided a day and volunteers are responsible for their own laundry.
This is an amazing program, and an excellent opportunity for those with less experience in a Medical related field. Simply bring along your passion for helping others, and a willingness to learn, and enjoy the beauty of Cape Town. Become a Love Volunteer and join us in South Africa!
