Litigation Paralegal Position -- Civil Rights

 About the Firm

Willenson Law is a boutique class action civil rights firm focused on gender, race, and disability discrimination litigation, and more broadly, civil rights, wage theft, and gender violence issues. The firm has a national reputation in public safety hiring and other employment discrimination litigation—in firefighting, EMS, police, and corrections—as well as wage theft class actions for  farmworkers and other migrant workers.

A paralegal at Willenson Law will be a front-line participant in the firm’s creative class action litigation and work closely with attorneys, co-counsel, clients, and witnesses.

The firm has an immediate opening for a full-time litigation paralegal who will join a team of attorneys and paralegals litigating a significant sexual harassment case against the Cook County Sheriff on behalf of hundreds of women correctional officers, nurses, paramedics, and social workers.

Paralegal Responsibilities

  • Interview clients and potential witnesses, with sensitivity, gathering critical information on claims and damages
  • Assist attorneys in client meetings
  • Organize and maintain case pleadings, case calendars, and case files utilizing file management, electronic discovery, and client database platforms
  • Serve as firm pleadings clerk, including maintaining attorney calendars and electronic file for all litigation records
  • Receive and respond to inquiries from potential clients
  • Prepare, edit, and format documents and court filings, such as motions and briefs and compile, format, and finalize exhibits
  • Contribute to document review and deposition/trial preparation efforts, utilizing electronic discovery platforms
  • File documents on electronic court dockets
  • Provide general office support as needed
  • Research and understand basic Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, local court rules, and individual judge’s case management procedures
  • Research and understand basic Illinois Rules of Civil Procedure, rules in Cook County Circuit Court, individual state court judge’s case management procedures, and filing and service procedures in state court cases

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent paralegal certification and experience
  • Superior organization and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to master online (SaaS) software applications
  • Commitment to the firm’s cases and to client confidentiality
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to work well with diverse colleagues, clients, and co-counsel and to support the firm’s commitment to inclusion
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently and on a team as well as to manage multiple assignments simultaneously

 Related prior work experience, commitment to the firm’s practice areas, knowledge of litigation and legal proceedings in federal or state court, understanding of court dockets or PACER, or experience with Nextpoint or other electronic discovery platform is a plus. 

Spanish-language skills are highly valued and will be utilized.

$40,000 - $50,000Base salary will be set to reflect relevant experience, with bonus potential
