Company Description

At Greater Good Studio, we work exclusively on addressing some of society’s toughest challenges by designing programs and services for non-profit, foundation, and government agency clients. From early literacy and child nutrition, to veterans housing and tenants’ rights, our projects tackle issues of health, education, poverty and injustice head-on. We believe that the best way to empower clients and communities is to put the design process in their hands, and the best way to create impact is to craft deeply respectful, empathic and user-centered tools and experiences.

Please note that presently, and for the foreseeable future, our team is working remotely. Because we intend to resume in-person work once it is deemed safe, we are seeking candidates located in (or willing to relocate to) Chicago.

Additionally, we are unable to provide sponsorship to applicants who require or will require a work permit.

Role Description

Greater Good Studio seeks a talented multidisciplinary designer to join our team!

We are seeking a life-long learner who is passionate about using the tools and mindsets of design to create a more equitable society. The designer will bring human-centered approaches to ideation, concept development, and prototyping in order to engage clients and communities in the design process and to create new solutions.

A successful candidate is experienced in human-centered design and comfortable working in the social and/or public sectors. Ideally, you have a strong foundation in communication and visual design as well as a diverse toolkit of multidisciplinary design skills that can be applied across different topics. You work visually and flexibly and are interested in participating in all phases of the human-centered design process in a highly collaborative environment.

This is a full-time, permanent staff position based in Chicago, with some (primarily domestic) travel, once deemed safe and travel advisories are lifted.

Responsibilities

  • Articulate and visualize abstract or complex concepts across a wide range of solution spaces including digital and physical tools, programs, and services
  • Create concept communication materials such as illustrations/mockups, storyboards, user experience journey maps, and system maps for use in user research and prototyping, as well as synthesis and ideation workshops
  • Translate research insights and design opportunities into diagrams and visual frameworks
  • Create visual and interactive prototypes in order to gather feedback on design concepts from a wide range of audiences
  • Create design deliverables such as wireframes, service blueprints, and screen designs
  • Create communication deliverables such as slide decks, reports, worksheets, posters, and digital whiteboards for use in presentations and workshops
  • Participate in the facilitation of ideation workshops with clients and communities
  • Participate in all phases of the HCD process in order to better inform your design work, such as:
  • Secondary research to understand context, benchmark the field, and surface design patterns across solution spaces
  • Primary/field research using ethnographic methods such as observation and deep listening
  • Research synthesis to uncover insights and design opportunities
  • Participate in teaching and coaching human-centered design methods with clients and communities
  • Collaborate in a team-based environment with researchers, designers, project leads, and clients
  • Participate in internal team-building, contributing to company culture and professional development
  • Contribute to internal initiatives such as workflows, procedures, or policies as needed

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in a design capacity, such as communication, visual, or user experience design (experience may include internships, apprenticeships, and other professional work completed while as a student)
  • Minimum 2 years of practical experience in human-centered design/design thinking (experience may include doing projects in a professional or hands-on educational setting)
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with or volunteering for a social impact cause
  • Proficiency in visual design
  • Proficiency in a variety of digital software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Miro, Keynote, etc.
  • Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience facilitating the design process for others
  • Willing to travel (once deemed safe and travel advisories are lifted) for research and client workshops
