Full Charge Bookkeeper

Background: 

Bluestockings is a community space that funds its operations as a bookstore, cafe, and events venue. It has been a core part of feminist, LGBTQ, and sex working communities in the Lower East Side for the last 23 years, providing a nonjudgmental and supportive place for marginalized people to connect with resources, engage with literature and culture, educate themselves and each other about oppression and liberation, and build vital relationships.

In April of 2021, Bluestockings reopened as a queer- trans- and sex worker- cooperatively-owned business. The worker-owners use consensus-based decision-making and all have an equal role in determining the conditions of our work, including setting wages and sharing potential profits at the end of the fiscal year. Over the past year, we’ve been in the process of expanding what we offer to the community and are now looking for another cooperative member to join part-time.The worker-owners are looking to improve daily operations by adding a cooperative member who will focus specifically on the financial management and sustainability of the business to do as much of the radical work for the many communities we serve as possible, for as long as possible! 

Job Duties:

• Documenting financial transactions
• Managing accounts receivable and accounts payable
• Processing payroll
• Corresponding with vendors to resolve any billing issues
• Presenting a monthly financial report at cooperative meetings with other worker-owners
• Run cash flow forecasts, profit and loss statements
• Gathering supporting financial documentation as needed
• Familiarity with cafe and register and ability to run POS during rushes as needed
• Work will mostly be performed in-store, with the ability to occasionally work from home.   
• Attending all cooperative meetings and assisting in communicating with accountants, vendors and lawyers 

Qualifications:

• Associate’s degree and bookkeeping certification, and 3 years of experience with a small business in New York
• Also open to candidates who no not have a degree but have at least 5 years equivalent experience as a full charge bookkeeper for a small business in New York
• Bookstore experience preferred 
• BookManager POS experience strongly preferred

Skills and Experience:

• Proficient with Quickbooks
• Ability to work well independently as well as in a group setting
• Strong communication skills
• Familiarity with Gusto preferred
• Familiarity with open books management a plus
• Work or volunteer experience in LGBTQ and/or harm reduction organizations strongly preferred
