This is an exciting opportunity to join our corporate business team and assist us with this past year's transition, which includes a focus on expanding our growing publications division. What makes this team unique is our experienced team of writers, editors, photographers and designers who have produced more than 520 publications covering a wide range of subjects.

Our ideal Accounting Specialist is experienced in the full cycle accounting processes for AP and payroll, and has both experience and insight in managing complex business and revenue changes in a multi-program/location organization.

This position with primarily work remote during COVID.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Bi-weekly payroll preparation, submission and reporting; maintaining payroll (Sage 100) database; updating and managing benefits and other deductions; completing month-end payroll tasks; filing and paying biweekly, quarterly, and annual payroll taxes; processing wage garnishments
  • Accounts payable, including obtaining approval of payment and proper coding; coordinating Cash Requirements with the Senior Accountant; maintaining vendor files (Sage 100 and paper copies); completing month-end and annual A/P tasks
  • Preparing Forms W-2, 1099, and 1094-C/1095-C annually
  • Researching problems and reconciling discrepancies
  • Assisting with General Ledger month end close and other tasks as needed
  • Providing a variety of reports, both routine and on request
  • Staying up-to-date on changes in payroll law and requirements
  • Serving as backup to Senior Accountant
  • Providing backup and reporting for HR on request
  • Specialized projects make up a significant portion of the task work for this position
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or similar field OR
  • 4+ years relevant work experience in payroll and/or A/P; some general ledger and month-end experience preferred
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of GAAP and regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state employment laws and practices
  • Advanced software skills including Excel
  • Ability to manage specialized projects
  • Sharp math skills and quantitative skills
  • Strong filing and organizational skills
  • 10-key by touch and typing/keyboarding required
  • Account reconciliation and financial analysis experience preferred
  • Experience with Sage 100 (previously MAS90) a plus.
  • Strong accounting and technical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and process data timely and accurately with little supervision
