Mersky, Jaffe & Associates, a national executive search and consulting firm, has been engaged to conduct a search for the next Director of Advancement of Daily Table, Boston, Massachusetts, a nonprofit grocery store chain on a mission to provide access to healthy, affordable food in communities in need.


Daily Table exists to provide access to affordable nutrition for everyone. It does this through both ready-to-eat meals, and a selection of produce and grocery items all at prices that are designed to improve access to a truly nutritious diet. Led by Doug Rauch, former President of Trader Joe’s, Daily Table opened its first store in June 2015 in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston and opened its second store in Roxbury in January 2018. You are an experienced and entrepreneurial fundraising and development professional who will help Daily Table continue to thrive and reach its next phase of growth. Daily Table’s unique retail operating model is designed to allow the organization to raise money for its mission by delivering on its mission. The organization has a long-term path toward financial self-sufficiency and is using philanthropy to cover the gap for the foreseeable future.

You will share the vision of the founder and have a passion for creating a positive, scalable, and sustainable impact in low to moderate income urban neighborhoods.

As Director of Advancement, you will possess an entrepreneur’s mindset, coupled with strong skills in all areas of traditional fundraising, including major gifts, foundation grant seeking, corporate sponsorships, and annual fund. You will also create and execute, in consultation with other Daily Table leadership, a fundraising-focused communications strategy to address different audiences (customers, suppliers, donors, community leaders, and others).


You will devote most of your time to fundraising to supplement Daily Table’s earned income with sustainable, renewable philanthropic dollars from individuals, foundations, and corporations. In collaboration with the President, COO and Board, create, adapt and execute annual and multi-year fundraising plans. Additionally, you will

•     Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors, funders and prospects for philanthropic contributions to Daily Table;

•     Prepare high-quality grant proposals, reports, mailings and other communications;

•     Leverage the time of the President and/or Board to advance development efforts;

•     Collaborate with the President to identify, research, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual and institutional prospects and donors;

•     Explore new and emerging models for funding social enterprises; including MRI/PRI and other financing opportunities;

•     Develop and implement effective fundraising appeals (both written and online) and platforms (such as monthly recurring donors) that will lead to sustained and enhanced giving;

•     Plan and execute intimate donor cultivation events such as house parties, author readings or tours of Daily Table; and

•     Explore the potential for large scale events as part of the fundraising strategy

In addition to the primary responsibilities outlined above, you may be assigned other responsibilities from time to time by the COO.


You are a senior development professional with at least a ten-year career of increasing achievement and responsibility. In addition, you will manifest

•     A commitment to the mission and vision of Daily Table;

•     A demonstrated interest in food insecurity, nutrition and/or food systems is a plus;

•     Strategic and tactical vision for growth in development and fundraising;

•     A well-organized ability to execute on strategy in an efficient manner;

•     Experience working directly with leaders of foundations, corporations and high net worth individuals;

•     Excellent oral and written communication skills to craft strong and compelling narratives around Daily Table’s mission tailored to diverse audiences;

•     Proven success in developing and implementing appeals through both traditional and emerging technologies;

•     Excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and strong work ethic;

•     Independence and initiative with minimal direction;

•     An entrepreneurial mindset and comfort with ambiguity to create value with limited resources;

•     A good sense of design and be able to create good design including photography/graphic design; and

•     Expertise in social media marketing as a fundraising tool.
