GLAAD operates with support from foundations, corporations and individuals from every corner of the United States. Our highly skilled team of more than 50 staff work out of our Headquarters in New York and an office in Los Angeles, and support our expanded reach through multiple chapters across the country.  Over the past several years, GLAAD has achieved rapid and significant growth and currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million.


The Opportunity


GLAAD is seeking a proven, driven and exceptionally resourceful fundraising and development leader to be a key partner to the President & CEO to help shape and significantly advance the organization’s individual and institutional giving strategy and operations. The Vice President, Individual & Institutional Giving will be one of two key executive roles leading the Development Team responsible for shaping and driving the growth of GLAAD’s $12M fundraising program, of which individual and institutional giving comprise approximately $6M. The leader in this role will be responsible for leveraging and cultivating significant relationships with donors, philanthropists and institutional funders to achieve the goals set for the coming year.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Leadership & Strategy


  • Develop a high profile, high impact and comprehensive individual and institutional giving strategy and operational plan to drive awareness and increase philanthropic support of GLAAD’s core mission and work
  • Oversee a team of six fundraising managers and professionals, networks and systems to significantly expand GLAAD’s network of contacts and philanthropic relationships to drive the growth and diversification of the leadership gift fundraising program including all individual donors and institutional funders and supporters
  • Build a high-performing and cohesive team to effectively implement “best in class” individual and institutional giving activities and programs
  • Work across the organization to align Board and staff, resources and organizational relationships to help cultivate a significantly expanded donor base and new institutional partners
  • Serve as a significant ambassador and external relationship builder representing the mission and philanthropic goals of GLAAD to prospective donors and institutional funders and supporters
  • Develop key performance indicators and provide to the President & CEO on an on-going basis management reports documenting fundraising activities and results


Individual Giving


  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and robust annual giving, major gift and planned giving program with the goal of soliciting and securing a diverse portfolio of new principal giving prospects whose philanthropic interests are aligned with the core mission and work of GLAAD
  • Provide inspiring leadership and direction to a team of six fundraising managers and professionals including a Major Gifts Officer, Director of Foundations, Senior Membership Manager, Membership Coordinator, Assistant Director of Donor Services, and Database Manager
  • Create and implement strategies to achieve the annual fundraising goal and grow the membership program through a diversified marketing and appeal program utilizing various medium including face to face solicitations, on-line solicitation and direct mail appeals
  • Plan, direct and execute all solicitation activities and strategies in coordination with the Board, President & CEO and members of the leadership team to leverage their contacts and networks
  • Prepare prospect research, strategy and briefing materials for all face to face meetings and solicitations with potential donors
  • Develop recognition opportunities for individual donors and benefits for individual membership
  • Building partnerships with institutional leaders and colleagues to help support individual giving campaigns 
  • Personally, cultivate and manage a portfolio of significant high net worth individuals 
  • Work with the Development Team to build effective donor cultivation and stewardship methods; and increase donor engagement and solicitation activities
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications and Digital and Creative Departments to develop promotional and collateral materials and a social media strategy to support cultivation activities
  • Collaborate with the Board, President & CEO and Development Team to recruit and develop volunteer leadership to be engaged in fundraising activities
  • Utilize a data-driven performance metrics system to actively track interactions and contacts with donors, and both forecast and evaluate success in achieving annual revenue targets


Institutional Giving & Grants


  • Develop and build a strategic annual institutional giving plan and grants strategy for the organization including cultivating existing and a new pipeline of private and corporate foundation and institutional funders to advance GLAAD’s overall philanthropic goals - including annual and capital funds, social impact projects and GLAAD’s Media Institute
  • Lead the development of a portfolio of comprehensive and strategic proposals to potential funders and supporters including coordination of all work plans, program design, project timelines, and grant agreements
  • Meet with the leadership team on an on-going basis to understand funding priorities and develop a roadmap for targeting potential funders to address these needs 
  • Engage with and facilitate positive relationships with all institutional partners and funders
  • Track and monitor pipeline of grant opportunities and disseminate to Development Team as appropriate
  • Plan, execute and coordinate all proposals and grant applications including forecasting annual funding from institutional funders; deliverable and milestone projections; grant award negotiations; and grant reporting requirements


Candidate Profile | Competencies | Personal Qualities


The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies and personal qualities:


Experience | Education


  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years’ fundraising experience with a proven track record of building and growing successful multi-million-dollar level individual and institutional giving programs for a significant social impact organization /nonprofit enterprise
  • Experience soliciting gifts at all levels including six and seven figure gifts from high net worth individuals, and cultivating partnerships with senior executive/C-Suite leadership
  • Deep understanding and prior working relationship with a diverse range of corporate foundations and institutional funders supporting social impact causes, including those with a focus in the LGBTQ community
  • Able to craft and execute a complex donor strategy on behalf of the senior leadership team
  • Technology savvy with ability to conceptualize technology needs to support individual and institutional giving program; working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and/or other fundraising platforms
