Key-Log Economics believes that interactions between human and natural systems should result in efficient, just, and sustainable outcomes. We help achieve those outcomes by completing independent applied ecological-economic research, putting research results into the hands of NGOs, public land managers, and other stakeholders, and helping them craft and execute better-informed strategies to advance conservation goals. Our particular expertise lies in conducting land and resource policy analysis backed by solid spatial, statistical, and other quantitative and qualitative research, and in delivering research results as reports, peer-reviewed articles, and strategic communications for policy, scientific, and lay audiences.
Key-Log Economics LLC is an employee-owned (and currently majority women-owned) learning organization that has grown from one part-time employee-owner in late 2013 to four positions (~3.5 FTE) with subcontractors, and interns adding capacity on an as-needed basis. Clients range from small community groups to federal agencies and an R1 university.
We are in a period of growth with a rich mix of project work in the U.S. and Asia. We are poised to expand our international work with the opening of a branch office in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2018 that will be staffed by our founder. Our goal is that the senior associate will build on the foundation we have established. We aim to improve our efficiency in producing and deploying ecological-economic research, increase our effectiveness in serving clients in existing markets, and advance our sustainability through care for our team and culture, and through strategic expansion into new, compatible markets.
In light of our growth, current opportunities, and intentions for future expansion, Key-Log Economics seeks an experienced professional to
● co-lead future business development;
● lead project management;
● handle routine administrative tasks; and
● contribute substantially to the conduct and communication of research.
The ideal candidate will have completed a masters or doctorate in ecological/environmental economics or a closely related field (e.g., environmental policy) and be facile in quantitative and/or policy analysis of conservation challenges. They should also have experience managing organizations and/or significant business units within a larger organization, a working knowledge of accounting norms and systems, be exceptionally computer literate, and be ready to learn whatever is necessary to contribute to the success of her/his colleagues.
The essential requirements, however, are:
● Passion for conservation/environmental sustainability and a commitment to helping diverse stakeholders achieve meaningful conservation results;
● Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a small team;
● Excellent written and oral communication skills;
● Demonstrated capacity for analyzing environmental/sustainability issues and effects; and
● Demonstrated success developing, leading, and managing teams, projects, programs, and/or organizations.
Key-Log Economics is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, where onboarding and some early work will be performed. Much of the work of the position, however, can be accomplished remotely, and details of the work schedule and location will be determined on hiring. All positions in the company are paid on an hourly basis with typical work weeks up to 40 hours and wages commensurate with experience. Membership in the LLC (co-ownership) is also possible. The position will remain open until filled. Key-Log Economics is becoming an important source for ecological-economic research in the U.S. and beyond.
