The Position: Director of Curriculum and Assessment: Math & Science

This exempt, full-time position’s overall objective is to develop exceptional math and science instructional materials and assessments. The ideal candidate will be a talented writer with an eye for how to most effectively reach students at a variety of levels. Work location is the Lincoln Park office located in Chicago, IL.


This position will report to Executive Director of Education.


As the Director of Curriculum and Assessment: Math & Science, you will have the following job responsibilities:


Curriculum Development & Staff Management

* Lead development of curriculum, including assessments and instructional materials targeting ACT/SAT and high school entrance exams (including ISEE, HSPT, SSAT, and selective enrollment exams)

* Develop and meet essential project specifications and critical timelines to serve company and client needs through writing of highest quality curriculum as well as reviewing and supporting the writing of other team members

* Lead development process through final typesetting and print publishing as well as development of instructional support materials

* Lead and improve process of creating online instructional and support materials

* Develop and maintain systems for soliciting, evaluating, and implementing feedback from Academic Approach’s internal and external stakeholders, including participating in large-scale piloting and research on new materials and updates and corrections to existing materials

* Participate in hiring and managing a team of developers to create world-class materials for students, faculty, and tutors

* Supervise 5-6 flex staff to support writing and editing of curriculum, ensuring high quality, efficiency, and cost management

* Follow established protocols for construct and content validity

* Commit to meticulous process to ensure error-free materials


Evaluating & Assessing Best Practices

* Develop tools and procedures for evaluating impact of curriculum, instruction, and assessments

* Support validity testing and research efforts to evaluate effectiveness and impact of Academic Approach curriculum

* Support workshop and focus group efforts to evaluate implementation of Academic Approach curriculum and materials


Communication & Work with Senior Management

* Work with other Curriculum Directors to identify emerging trends in education including research on curriculum, schools, districts, conferences, etc. to keep the team abreast of latest developments and opportunities

* Coordinate with directors to support material usage in instruction, to assess current needs, and communicate plans for action

* Work with other Curriculum Directors to identify and implement best practices

The Director of Curriculum and Assessment: Math & Science position requires the following qualifications:

* Bachelor’s degree required

* Math content expertise through Calculus required

* History of strong performance on standardized tests

* 3-5 years curriculum development experience required

* Experience developing multi-grade curricula preferred

* Experience in publishing process and/or typesetting through Adobe InDesign preferred

* Expertise in standard alignment, preferably CCRS, SAT, and/or Common Core required

* Expertise in ACT/SAT content and construct required

* Strong Microsoft Excel skills required

* Expertise in instructional leadership preferred

* Experience in curriculum research, development, and/or management preferred

* Experience with development of eLearning courses preferred

* Experience in staff management preferred

* Strong attention to detail, flexibility, communication, and organizational skills

* Must be able to sit for long periods of time
