The Opportunity 

Hope Starts Here (HSH) is a community-wide initiative designed to help Detroit’s youngest residents reach their full potential. HSH uses a distributed leadership model where six teams work together to support the initiative’s overall mission. Each team is organized around an “Imperative” with specific member organizations, goals, and policy priorities. Policy Equity Group, the organization charged with facilitating the work of the Imperative teams, is inviting applications for a dynamic and collaborative individual to serve as Hope Starts Here facilitator. This role will be critical to the ongoing success of the initiative. This is a full-time position with the Policy Equity Group, with approximately 60% of time dedicated to the role of Hope Starts Here facilitator and approximately 40% providing support to other projects. The applicant must reside in the Detroit Metropolitan Area and be a native of the Detroit community.  

The Hope Starts Here facilitator will:  

  • Convene the Hope Starts Here imperative leads on a regular basis; support imperative lead policy goals and assist in tracking indicators of success;  
  • Work to create connect, and support communication, across all of the Hope Starts Here actors include the Imperative Leads, policy, communication, and data consultants, and the Hope Starts Here advisory group;  
  • Support the creation of content on behalf of imperatives, including talking points for both press and policymakers at the state and local level, monthly written updates, newsletter content, and end-of-year reports;  
  • Attend community-based events in Detroit to uplift and support the work of the imperatives;  
  • Support the planning and execution of outreach efforts to families in the Detroit community;

The Hope Starts Here initiative was founded on November 10, 2016, and is the city’s first-ever strategic framework focused on early childhood development and family wellbeing. Designed by stakeholders, including parents/caregivers, early educators, nonprofits, and government agencies, the initiative seeks to ensure all children in Detroit have access to high-quality early childhood experiences, increased access to healthcare and social services, and the continued creation of safe and nurturing environments for children to grow and learn.

About Policy Equity Group 

The Policy Equity Group works with organizations that support the well-being of children, families, and educators. We work to improve conditions across early childhood systems by: 

  • Building bridges between stakeholders—such as educators and families—and policymakers; 
  • Telling the stories of need and success; 
  • Engaging in advocacy and providing advocacy coaching. 
  • Centering equity within our organization and our work.

 Expected Competencies 

  • Authentic understanding of the culture, environment, existing programming, and other relevant aspects of the Detroit community.  
  • Strong knowledge of the early childhood field and/or health and wellbeing of young children and families. Additional preference for candidates with a strong understanding of collective impact or policy and systems change.  
  • Demonstrated experience with project manager (5-10 years of experience), capable of coordinating and prioritizing multiple, interconnected projects and organizations  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable with conveying information across diverse audiences and stakeholders.  
  • Proficient facilitator with experience creating inclusive, collaborative spaces and supports authentic relationships, deep listening, and trust-building across diverse partners. Certificate in facilitation is a plus.  
  • Flexible and adaptive to the changing environment and priorities of the Hope Starts Here initiative and policy environment.  
  • Skilled at using community-based qualitative and quantitative data for storytelling.  
  • Experience working and thriving in an environment governed through a distributive leadership model is a plus. 
  • Consistently demonstrates an ability to lead with humility, transparency, and authenticity.  

Compensation and Employee Well-Being  

  • This is a full-time position. Compensation and benefits are commensurate with skills and work experience. The salary range for this position is between $90,000 and $100,000, with opportunities for rapid growth.   • We provide the tools and technology to support you in a remote work environment. Candidates must reside in the Detroit Metropolitan Area.
