The Opportunity


Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working in close partnership with the CEO, Board Treasurer/Chair of the Finance Committee and the senior leadership team, this is an exceptional opportunity for a skilled and astute financial leader committed to the mission and core work of GLAAD. The Director of Finance will manage and provide strategic leadership and sound business direction over all financial, accounting, auditing and budgeting functions of the organization. This position will be responsible for all strategic and operational matters as they relate to finance, risk management, fiscal forecasting, cost/benefit analysis and assuring the positive fiscal health of the organization. The Director of Finance will be a key member of the leadership team and a collaborative team player and resource to management and staff. 


Key Responsibilities


Strategic Financial Leadership


  • Provides financial advice and business counsel to guide and shape the organization’s financial strategy and plans to support its future growth. Ensures that the organization remains in strong fiscal health
  • Actively participates in meetings and serves as staff liaison to the Board Finance Committee. Provides financial reports and other metrics and data on industry practices and trends to support the Committee’s work in evaluating fiscal trends and other significant changes in operations impacting the finances of the organization
  • Participates in on-going strategic planning and risk management with the CEO, COO and senior leadership team. Assists with financial planning and results management. Provides key financial data/ metrics and serves as a helpful resource making recommendations to assist with financial planning, results management, and mitigating financial and business risks for the organization
  • Provides support and applicable data to various members and Committees of the Board to assist them in monitoring investments of the organization and coordinating other administrative activities related to these investments in accordance with the organization’s investment policy


Financial and Operational Management


  • Oversees the financial performance of the organization and prepares all related financial statements and reports including, but not limited to the Balance Sheet, Statement of Activities, Cash Flow and Budget Variance Report for review and consideration by the CEO, COO and Board of Directors
  • Develops, implements and monitors the organization’s budget and forecasts revenue and expenses trends and variances
  • Develops and promulgates all fiscal and accounting policies for the organization
  • Provides oversight, direction and training of a small Finance team
  • Ensures that the Finance Department maintains all financial records and systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and that it effectively monitors and implements systems to control and safeguard the funds and financial assets of the organization
  • Oversees and manages the day to day accounting operations and transactions including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing and payroll
  • Manages cash flow and cash flow forecasting for the organization and interfaces with banks to effectively monitor all cash balances
  • Oversees the preparation and submittal of financial reports to all private and philanthropic supporters of the organization
  • Maintains records/controls on all corporate credits cards, any applicable lines of credit or loan covenants, banking relationships and investment institutions supporting the organization’s assets
  • Works with the organization’s outside CPA/Audit Firm, Board Treasurer and Board Audit Committee to provide the necessary financial data and reports to support the annual fiscal audit of the organization, review of internal controls, and the annual accounting department performance review
  • Oversees the internal process for preparing the necessary data to assure the timely and accurate completion of the IRS Form 990 and other applicable regulatory reporting requirements  
  • Oversees the administration and financial reporting related to the organization's Board Designated, Capital and Investment Funds
  • Reviews finance operations, accounting workflow and all transactions processes and makes recommendations for continuous process and systems improvement, controls and efficiencies
  • Performs other duties as may be requested by the Chief Operating Officer

 

Candidate Profile | Competencies | Personal Qualities


The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies and personal qualities:


Experience | Education:


  • Bachelors’ Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business from an accredited college or university
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in finance, preferably in a nonprofit setting, of which at least seven (7) years were in a senior financial leadership role with both operational controllership and strategic financial planning and analysis responsibility
  • Experience working with MIP financial systems 
  • Prior experience working with independent auditing/accounting firms and reporting financial performance and results to a Board of Directors
  • Intimate knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices and standards plus a proven track record of experience across all general accounting operations
  • Working knowledge of automated financial software systems and technology
