From Tokyo to Times Square: Kyoko Oyobe

Join us for an enchanting evening of jazz with the Kyoko Oyobe Trio at Klavierhaus on Tuesday, November 5, as part of our Japanese Jazz Piano Series, “From Tokyo to Times Square.” This series celebrates the vibrant musical and cultural bridge between Japan and New York.

Japanese-born pianist and composer Kyoko Oyobe has been a vital force in the New York jazz scene since her arrival in 2005. A prodigy who began playing piano at age four, Kyoko’s musical journey took a pivotal turn at 19 when she was inspired by a live performance of Kensaku Tanikawa, leading her to the world of jazz.

Having studied under jazz luminaries Frank Hewitt, Jean Michel Pilc, and Gil Coggins, Kyoko quickly made her mark in New York City, performing at renowned venues like Smalls Jazz Club and Fat Cat. Her debut album, “Cookin’ at Smalls,” recorded live with her trio, was released to critical acclaim in 2009, followed by her 2015 album “Happy Silence,” featuring Steve Wilson, Matt Wilson, and Michael O’Brien.

Kyoko has performed and composed internationally with jazz greats such as Tom Harrell, Victor Lewis, Steve Wilson, and Randy Brecker. Her distinctive style, which blends Be-Bop, Brazilian, and Free Jazz with French-Impressionist influences, has captivated audiences worldwide.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Kyoko Oyobe’s unique blend of jazz mastery in an intimate setting. Her trio, featuring some of New York’s finest musicians, promises an evening of unforgettable music.
