The San Francisco Department on the Status of Women is seeking a recent college graduate or graduate student for a Public Policy Fellow position focused on issues of human trafficking and women’s rights. The position will run for a 10-month period to begin April 1, 2020. The Fellow will be expected to work in the Department’s Civic Center office during regular business hours, and occasional evening events, for approximately 24-32 hours per week. A stipend of $20 per hour is provided for the Fellowship. The position reports to the Department’s Senior Manager for Human Trafficking. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but are due no later than Friday, February 28, 2020.

About the Fellowship

The fellow will spend the majority of their time working with the San Francisco Mayor’s Task Force on Anti-Human Trafficking. In March 2013, former Mayor Ed Lee launched the Task Force to review current efforts to improve the City’s response to human trafficking and identify gaps in services for survivors. The Task Force takes a comprehensive, victim-centered approach and includes city departments and community-based organizations. It aims to effectively intervene in human trafficking situations and focuses on long-term local solutions to this complex issue that affects the whole community. The Department on the Status of Women staffs the Task Force. The Fellow will also support the Department’s policy and advocacy efforts to improve the City's response to human trafficking including providing support for the San Francisco Safety, Opportunity, and Lifelong (SF SOL) Collaborative project.

Examples of Activities and Tasks

The Public Policy Fellow will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

  • collect data and analyze trends from government agencies and community-based organizations on incidents of human trafficking including labor and commercial sexual exploitation;
  • create graphs, charts, and tables and draft a Human Trafficking Report and Dashboard to inform policy & protocol recommendations;
  • assist with implementation of policy and protocol recommendations identified by the Task Force;
  • plan, coordinate, and execute logistics for quarterly meetings of the Task Force; and
  • other research and assignments as needed.
