Attorney General Maura Healey is looking for an experienced attorney to help oversee the investigation and prosecution of civil rights cases in state and federal courts, as well as related policy initiatives. The Deputy Division Chief will be located in the Boston office and will be part of the Attorney General's Civil Rights Division. The Division investigates and prosecutes civil rights cases in areas such as education, employment, health care, housing, credit/lending, public accommodations, and the enjoyment of individual civil liberties.  These cases involve challenging and complex enforcement initiatives, coordination with other state agencies and federal authorities, policy development, and close work with community and advocacy groups.

Primary Duties: The Deputy Division Chief will work closely with the Division Chief and assist in overseeing the litigation and policy work of the Civil Rights Division.  The Deputy Division Chief will be responsible for helping to develop the Division's docket of enforcement matters and for supervising investigations and litigation in state and federal courts, as well as related administrative tasks. The Deputy Division Chief’s supervisory responsibilities will include mentoring attorneys and other division staff, and assisting them with skills development as needed. The Deputy Division Chief will also perform many of the duties of a line attorney, including handling his/her own cases; developing policy initiatives; reviewing and mediating complaints from members of the general public; reviewing and drafting amicus briefs and proposed legislation; and conducting outreach with community and advocacy groups, including through speaking engagements and attending community meetings.

Position Requirements: Applicants must have a minimum of eight years of relevant civil litigation experience.  Prior litigation experience in the area of civil rights or comparable affirmative litigation is preferred, but not required. Prior management experience is helpful, but not required. Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar.

In addition to possessing strong writing, research, advocacy, and communication skills, applicants must also have the ability to oversee multiple complex and challenging matters and must have demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making skills. Applicants must have some experience with public speaking. Applicants must also have a demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with others, including other attorneys and staff.
