The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who in turn teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City’s intellectual and cultural life.
The GC seeks a senior development professional to join the Institutional Advancement team in the area of major gifts, with a concentration on the sciences and graduate education. The Science and Major Gifts Officer will be involved in development for the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC). S/he will provide leadership in formulating and implementing effective goals, strategies, and activities to secure major and principal gifts for the sciences and the GC. Additionally, the incumbent will manage an individual portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and will provide collaborative leadership in strategizing and facilitating opportunities for major gift fundraising among Institutional Advancement staff, creating an environment that enhances communication and encourages collaboration between all senior administrative staff and faculty.
This position reports to the Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Develops and implements a comprehensive fundraising program for the sciences, with a special emphasis on the ASRC, including major giving and corporate and foundation strategies, as well as for other GC strategic areas as identified.
- Works with the Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Dean for the Sciences, the Executive Director/Associate Dean for the Sciences, the Provost and the President on leadership giving and develops strategies for ASRC and science-orientated prospects and donors, and other major gift prospects for the GC.
- Conducts prospect identification and qualification of major gift prospects for the ASRC with emphasis on the five initiatives of scientific research: nanoscience, structural biology, neuroscience, environmental sciences, and photonics.
- Works closely with the Director of each initiative at the ASRC and the Executive Director of the ASRC on major gift strategies or referrals, utilizing the existing grant information and expertise of the ASRC Grants Office.
- Conducts qualification, solicitation and stewardship of leadership gift donors and prospects of GC's Institutional Advancement Office appropriately to encourage long-term relationships.
- Assists with strategic cultivation events.
- Reports and documents development activity and results to achieve specific and measurable goals for contacts, prospect phase management, proposals presented and dollars raised.
- Collaborates on writing gift agreements as needed.
- Builds and maintains effective working relationships at all organizational levels - colleagues, deans, Graduate Center Foundation Trustees, faculty, GC and CUNY administrative staff, donors, and others.

- Builds relationships, seeking new donors through prospecting using a variety of sources, and maintaining ongoing relationships with existing donors, collaborating with College and University management
- Ensures reporting requirements are completed in timely and accurate manner; utilizes automated systems for tracking and reporting
- Adheres to established protocols such as the University's gift acceptance policy
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.
A preferred candidate should have:
- Exposure to a scientific discipline in a higher education institution.
- Five (5) years of experience working with major gift donors.
- Work experience in a not-for-profit organization.
- Ability to translate complex scientific research into terms that the layman will grasp.
- Experience engaging with high-net-worth prospects and donors who are sophisticated, intellectually curious, and typically have a keen interest in science.
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills.
- Ability to articulate the case for private support for public education with sufficient effectiveness so that individuals understand the vision and strategy of the GC and choose to invest in that vision.
- A proven track record of success in the cultivation, stewardship, and closing of gifts from individual major donors at the five-figure level, or demonstrated transferable skills to be successful in closing major gifts.
- Working knowledge of Moves Management as a fundraising strategy; proficiency in Microsoft Word and Raiser’s Edge, or demonstrated capacity to learn new data management systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively and meaningfully with individuals in diverse settings using a range of techniques including face to face, telephone, email and written correspondence.
- Ability to plan and prioritize work, using time and other resources effectively to maximize desired outcomes.
- Ability to take initiative and strong attention to detail.
