The Office of City Councilmember Helen Gym, a progressive champion whose work moves at the local and national level, seeks a dynamic and motivated communications professional to serve as communications director.

The communications director advances the work of the Councilmember through strategic communications including earned media, social media campaigns, digital organizing, and direct communication with constituents and community organizations. The communications director works closely with policy and community outreach staff to develop and disseminate the office’s legislative and political messages to a broad range of audiences. The communications director also composes and edits a variety of written materials, including public statements and speeches, promotional materials, and official correspondence. This is a fast-paced, prolific office which engages media at the local and national level. 

A successful candidate will have: excellent writing and communications skills; commitment to racial and economic justice; a passion for both following and shaping the news; understanding of key policy issues at the local and national level, in particular public education policy; proficiency with media relations, social media management, basic graphic design, digital photography, e-blasts, and digital communications and organizing. Experience with progressive political or community organizing initiatives is preferred.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop an overarching strategic communications framework, including messaging, tactics, and timeline. Implement digital organizing strategies as part of major legislative or policy initiatives.
  • Develop messaging and public-facing materials for legislative, policy, and community initiatives, including talking points, one-pagers, online graphics, and flyers.
  • Manage official social media accounts, including documenting daily events and accomplishments.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local reporters across print, radio, television, and online platforms and maintain a current contact list for local print and broadcast media.
  • Facilitate quotes, interviews, and the provision of background information to media on a timely basis and regularly pursue national media opportunities
  • Draft, press releases, speeches, talking points, newsletters, email updates, op-eds, and website copy.
  • Create infographics, social media graphics, signage and other visual materials to advance policy and legislative goals.
  • Assist in informing office on city-wide and national level policy, legislation, and current events.
  • Support the general administrative needs of the office.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 2-3 years experience in communications (in a field involving policy, politics, or organizing).
  • Ability to regularly attend night and weekend events, and work at flexible hours.
  • Valid PA drivers license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Philadelphia residency (may be established within six months of hire).
