The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a federal government agency under the Department of Health & Human Services is seeking a new Media Relations Advisor in the Media Relations Group within the Office of Communications. You will be responsible for providing senior leadership advice on key, mission-critical issues, initiatives and agency functions in the areas of strategic communications and media relation. Specifically, as the Advisor of the Media Relations Group, you will:
- Reviews and evaluates the information prepared for release to news media has sufficient value to warrant its release on a national basis and, in coordination with the Office of the Secretary/Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs (ASPA), determines the time of release of the information to achieve its maximum utilization, having regard, in general for the total news situation.
- Serves as a subject-matter expert, providing technical advice and direction to a staff of public affairs specialists in day-to-day media relations work. Plans, prepares, coordinates, and edits press releases, news and feature materials, conferences, and briefings for the press and other news media representatives. Enhances an organization’s social media presence to help communicate its programs, actions, and accomplishments. Plans and originates media releases to inform and educate beneficiaries, consumers, providers, contractors, and the general public.
- Organizes, arranges and coordinates media interviews with CMS officials in central and regional offices. Prepares announcements and contacts appropriate news media about news conferences, and prepares background materials for their use.
- As an advisor, the incumbent will be involved in the coordination, development, evaluation, and implementation of outreach and communications strategies to promote, through the media, CMS programs and initiatives aimed at maintaining and improving the nation’s health care.
