The WSBA's mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

 The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) operates under the delegated authority of the Washington Supreme Court to license the state's nearly 40,000 lawyers and other legal professionals. In furtherance of its obligation to protect and serve the public, the WSBA regulates lawyers and other legal professionals and serves its members as a professional association—all without public funding.

 

About the position:

The Member Services and Engagement (MSE) team coordinates and executes a range of projects, initiatives and programs that focus primarily on sections, mentorship, new members, rural practice, other member benefits, services, and engagement activities. These activities are designed to support member competence, professionalism, and strengthen community. The Member Engagement (ME) Specialist is responsible for projects, programs, and initiatives focused on, but not limited to new members, mentorship, rural practice, and other member benefits and services. This position collaborates particularly with the MSE Manager and the MSE Administrative Assistant to create a vision, set strategic goals, and execute on that vision. The ME Specialist will coordinate and implement a range of projects that provide online information and resources, education, professional development, and peer network support. Vision, creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit, combined with strong project management, volunteer engagement, outreach, and communication skills are important in this position.


The ME Specialist works closely with volunteers and various stakeholders, attention to detail, courtesy, diplomacy, and tact are extremely important.


 The ME Specialist requires a good strategic thinker and problem solver who is able to develop an operational work plan and prioritize work based on strategic goals and objectives. The ME Specialist is required to work collaboratively and to consistently exercise sound judgment.

The problems the ME Specialist faces can be large or small, simple or complex. The ME Specialist will need to understand how to build consensus and community, and identify the needs of a diverse membership base. As a large organization with many moving pieces, the ME Specialist must have the foresight to understand when potential problems could arise, identify efficient and effective solutions quickly, and determine when to consult a supervisor for support, input, and/or guidance.


 The ME Specialist is a visible role and will have contact with many WSBA staff and volunteers, including the Board of Governors and volunteer members of WSBA sections, committees, boards, taskforces, etc. The ME Specialist may provide presentations to various internal and external groups.

The ME Specialist works in a fast-paced environment with internal project deadlines and requirements to track, follow-up, and facilitate others meeting targets and deadlines. The ME Specialist must be able to juggle multiple and competing demands, as well as prioritize work to accomplish both short and long term goals.

 

Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred: Juris Doctorate                                                                       

 Experience Required: 

  • Project management experience.
  • Experience working in and around the legal community.
  • Experience working with and understanding volunteer structures.

Preferred Experience:

Two or more years developing and implementing programs related to professional development, specifically involving training, feedback, mentoring, career progression, diversity, professional skills development, and design models. Knowledge of trends in the legal profession and how these trends impact the legal community. One-two years’ experience with volunteer programs and engaging high skilled and high performing volunteers.

 Knowledge/Abilities/Skills Required: 

  • Comfortable in formal public speaking roles.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with ability to multi-task and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to change, adapt, and become flexible when directions change. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with and communicate directly and diplomatically with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Cultural competence.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with data.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills – e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, One Note, etc.
