The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill one Early Childhood Center Director vacancy within the Human Services Department. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, self-starting individual who can work with a diverse population and maintain a high quality early childhood program.

Under direction in the Human Services Department, the Early Childhood Center Director is fully responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a child development center in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations for the Head Start/State Preschool/Early Head Start Program(s); performing developmental assessments; implementing, supervising and monitoring daily early education activities; performing as a working supervisor to Early Head Start Instructors, Head Start Instructors, Early Head Start/Head Start Assistant Instructors and Family Advocates; and performing related duties as assigned.

Requires a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education or related field including twelve post-secondary semester units or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education or child development, plus three units of supervised field experience in ECE/CD setting completed at an accredited or approved college or university; AND a Children's Center Supervisory Permit (or higher level permit) issued by the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing. Must have two years of teaching in a licensed child care center or comparable group child care program. Previous experience in a Head Start Program is highly desirable. Must obtain Pediatric First Aid and CPR certifications within one year of employment and maintain throughout tenure of employment. Depending on the nature of the assignment, candidates who receive offers of employment will be required to submit fingerprints, undergo a criminal record clearance, and have a physical examination including a TB screening.

Must have knowledge of early childhood development, growth and behavior; curriculum design and development; writing child observations and completing computerized assessments; classroom management and coordinating and supervising the work of others; Head Start Program procedures and regulations; report writing; document and file maintenance; teaching varied subjects and experiences with children; and Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS). Good supervisory, public relations, computer, interpersonal, training, mentoring, coaching, analytical and verbal/written communication skills are also required.


Successful incumbents in this job are expected to operate an automotive vehicle in the performance of the assigned duties. Due to the nature of the assignment and the hours worked, public transportation may not be a cost-effective method for traveling to the various locations required. Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations or transport equipment in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
