Open Position: High School Chemistry Teacher
Academy for Young Writers, East New York, Brooklyn, United States
The Academy for Young Writers is a 6-12 college preparatory program. We use writing across all areas of our curriculum as a tool for engaging students, deepening understandings, and creating connections with the world.
Young Writers focuses on developing culturally responsive pedagogy, employing restorative practices, and honoring student voice as we continuously reflect. We believe that strong relationships and collaboration between all members of the school community are essential for students’ academic and social-emotional development. Everyone in our community is on a first-name basis. We use our advisory program to build strong trusting relationships with students around our common values and goals rather than institutional hierarchy.
Our school empowers student voice to create critical change in our community and in the larger world. We have thriving student leadership opportunities including Student Council, Black Lives Matter Movement Group, Latino Community and Culture Club. Our Gender-Sexuality-Alliance was named GLSEN’s GSA of the Year for 2016. Our students participate in the Borough Student Action Collaborative and the Student Voice Collaborative.
Our collaborative work is supported through our department and grade teams as well as weekly professional development in school. We leverage numerous programs and partnerships as well to improve academic and social-emotional outcomes in our community. Our partners include AP for All, Algebra for All, Expanded Success Initiative (ESI), the Mastery Collaborative, Morningside Center for Social Responsibility, Learning Partners (LPP), The Leadership Program, NYC Men Teach, Urban Advantage middle school science initiative, and we use Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Workshop curriculum in our middle school humanities classrooms.
Our modern school building on the Spring Creek Campus provides educators with the technology and facilities necessary for a rigorous, engaging and comprehensive 21st century education. We use google classroom. Students have easy access to Chromebooks. Every teacher uses a laptop for planning, and each room is equipped with a smartboard.
