Senior Accountant – Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency

The Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency’s (CASR) mission is to act with urgency to proactively mitigate climate change. Our objectives are to advance science-based strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a scale and timeline that align with the recommendations from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, cultivate resiliency in the face of potential climate change-related emergencies, secure an economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable city for generations to come, and ensure that the setting of goals and metrics and monitoring of results considers equity.

The Finance and Administration Division handles day-to-day office operations; develops, administers, and oversees contracts with vendors and technical consultants; manages CASR finances and annual budgets as well as grants and projects.

The Finance and Administration team has an opening for a Senior Accountant. This position will manage and process CASR financial transactions, ensure current policies and activities are in line with accounting standards, provides financial research, data and reports on demand.

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs complex and specialized accounting functions in support of CASR financial management (e.g., audits, reconciling discrepancies, financial analysis, etc.)
  • Reviews, creates, and enters accounting adjustments to correct expenses or revenues (journal vouchers)
  • Reviews and approves invoices for payment, ensures contract rates and terms are accurate for the larger, more complicated contracts, spot checks/audits smaller contracts
  • Assists office with purchasing activities such as requisitions and reconciliation of the same, and invoicing process policy and execution
  • Reviews, administers, and processes Purchase Change Orders, enters budget amendments in Workday
  • Reviews current financial policies and procedures and aligns them city fiscal rules, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and GASB; ensures compliance and maintains fiscal accountability regarding rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with GAAP.
  • Interacts with auditors, provides relevant information and enforces audit recommendations
  • Administers asset management in our system of record (capital assets and computer equipment) and provides accounting services for capital depreciation, etc.
  • Provides grant financial entries, reporting, invoicing, and tracking
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Familiarity with government accounting processes
  • Working knowledge of Workday or other enterprise accounting programs

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional level accounting experience reconciling accounting discrepancies, analyzing expenditures, and preparing financial reports.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
  • License/Certifications: None
