The Consulate General of Canada in New York (CNGNY) is seeking an International Business Development Officer to join our dynamic and forward thinking international trade team of professionals responsible for promoting, advancing, and strengthening Canadian trade and investment interests in the United States. The sector focus of the position is Information and Communications Technology (ICT) – with a focus in Digital tech (i.e.: e-commerce, e-health, enterprise software, Fintech etc.)


We are looking for someone who is innovative, has strong networking skills, is a team player and is committed to client success. The Officer will support Canadian technology companies that are seeking to grow their business through technology commercialisation and/or exports in the CNGNY territory, which includes the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware and Pennsylvania, as well as Bermuda. The Officer will also directly contribute to the Canadian Technology Accelerator (CTA) www.ctaconnects.com for DigitalTech and support foreign direct investment attraction to Canada.

Summary of duties:

Under the general direction of the Head of Innovation, the incumbent is responsible for providing integrated International Business Development support to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors, with a focus on Digital tech (ex: e-commerce/retail tech, EdTech, healthTech etc.) in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.


The incumbent is responsible for developing an export strategy to promote Canadian products and services, offer access to research, technology and venture capital business opportunities for Canadian companies and institutions, developing an effective network of Canadian and local partners to support program objectives; providing timely and relevant advice to Canadian clients and partners; undertaking research into local business trends; planning activities and initiatives to support export, investment and innovation strategies; and planning and/or offering support for high-level visits.


The incumbent will also focus on regular engagement with Canadian Technology Accelerator (CTA) (www.ctaconnect.com) Alumni and developing and implementing a strategy to support the success of CTA Alumni companies.


Conditions of employment (must be met):

·        The successful candidate will be required to obtain Government of Canada Reliability Status (RS) which includes a criminal and credit background check.


Essential requirements:

Candidates must demonstrate clearly how they meet the Education and Experience requirements listed below:


Language requirement:

Fluency in English (oral and written). The ability to work in French is considered an asset. 


Education:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a business, economics, or a field related to the duties of the position.


Experience:

·           At least 2 years of recent experience working in business development in New York in the Digital Tech sector (including, but not limited to e-commerce, e-health, enterprise software, AdTech, FinTech, Digital Media etc.);

·           Recent experience in managing client and key stakeholder relationships, and in obtaining, preparing for, and conducting meetings with private sector clients (i.e., business to business meetings, sales meetings, cold calls) especially as it relates to the information communications technology sector;

·           Recent experience in project management (including strategic planning, tracking/reporting results and budget management);

·           Recent experience conducting research and analysis and providing strategic advice, briefings and written reports to senior management and/or clients on business issues;

·           Recent experience working in teams and achieving results to meet team objectives. 


* Recent experience is defined as work experience in the last 5 years.


Rated Requirements:

Candidates who meet the Education and Experience requirements will be assessed on the following qualifications. The assessment may include an interview, a written test, and other tests that will consist of a series of questions designed to evaluate each applicant's knowledge, abilities, and personal suitability for this position.


Knowledge:

·       Basic knowledge of the role of the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, especially as it applies to programming to support the export of innovative Canadian technologies;

·       Knowledge of the challenges faced by growing, small innovative businesses, especially in Digital tech sectors;

·       Knowledge of Canada’s economy; and

·       Knowledge of the New York Tech ecosystem.

Operational Requirements:

Hours of work:

Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff (LES) regulations of 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate must be willing to work evenings, some weekends and holiday events. 

Travel:

The position will also require some business travel within the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as possible trips to Canada.
