The Office of Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair, Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District has an immediate full-time opening for an experienced Communications Deputy.

The First District is home to two million residents, across 246 square miles, in diverse communities from unincorporated East Los Angeles to Valinda, MacArthur Park to Eagle Rock, and South Gate to Pomona. The Communications Deputy must be community- and public service-oriented, with a passion for policy, politics, as well as traditional and digital communications.

The Communications Deputy must be a self-starter, motivated, adaptable, detail-oriented, able to problem solve and multi-task, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must also have the ability to maintain the confidentiality of various projects, correspondence, and other written or oral items as needed. Knowledge of a second language spoken in the District is preferred.

The ideal candidate must be able to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines, be an effective leader as well as a team player, and thrive in a fast-paced and changing environment.

This is an at-will exempt position and working after hours, on weekend and holidays is considered an essential function of this position.

Duties:

·        Draft press releases, media advisories, and other materials;

·        Draft statements on current events and other related matters;

·        Respond to daily media inquiries in a timely manner;

·        Develop creative media pitches to highlight the Supervisor’s work across the First District;

·        Draft newsletter articles in English and Spanish;

·        Support the management of a social media calendar and daily postings;

·        Create compelling digital content for various social media platforms including: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram;

·        Track media coverage and compile daily press clippings;

·        Assist in maintaining web content;

·        Prepare presentations and reports;

·        Maintain and update media list;

·        Facilitate effective internal communications through newsletters, announcements and weekly check-ins with Field Staff;

·        Assist in organizing press events; and

·        Other duties as directed.

Other essential duties include answering phones, routing mail, copying documents, filing and retrieving information, assembling press kits, and performing assigned research tasks.

Required Skills:

·        Strong written and oral communication skills;

·        Ability to work independently in a high-paced environment;

·        Detail-oriented and able to maintain accurate records;

·        Ability to work on several projects simultaneously;

·        Must be a team player;

·        Ability to attend to details while focusing on big-picture goals;

·        Familiarity with the First District;

·        Familiarity with the media landscape and how to foster relationships with key media outlets, including ethnic media;

·        Ability to work with racially and socio-economically diverse communities;

·        Knowledge of Los Angeles County systems;

·        Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work;

·        Pleasant personality with a dynamic professional attitude; and Strong skills in phone etiquette.

Minimum Qualifications:

·        A minimum of three (3) to four (4) years of experience as a Communications Manager in the office of an elected official, a governmental office, or the private sector;

·        Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;

·        A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
