Staff Assistant

Seeking an energetic, curious, flexible, and collaborative team player to support our District Offices in Newton and Attleboro in the MA-04. This entry-level position is based in the Newton office. 

The Staff Assistant acts as the representative for the Congressman at all times, including answering phones and written correspondence, meeting with constituents and organizations, and serving as a liaison with federal, district, and local agencies.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, hardworking, highly dependable, and organized.  The candidate should also possess strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks while working well under pressure.  Please know that you don’t have to know everything in this detailed job description in order to apply—what is most important is to be enthusiastic and willing to learn new things.


The Staff Assistant assists the District Director with the administrative duties of running the District Office, including interfacing with constituents on the phone and in person, overseeing the district intern program, ordering supplies, processing mail and submitting the franked mail report, and assisting in various other administrative activities.

The Staff Assistant also assists the DC Scheduler and the District Director in maintaining the Congressman's official district schedule.  This includes reviewing the Congressman’s mail and invitations in consultation with the DC Scheduler, preparing detailed itineraries for the Congressman, including important numbers, locations, and contact names.  The Staff Assistant also ensures that the Congressman is provided with briefing materials from the appropriate legislative and/or district staff. 

The Staff Assistant also has some district casework and field duties.  This includes monitoring and updating the Congressman and District Director on district and local issues and representing the Congressman at local events and meetings.  The Staff Assistant also assists the district team by creating reports to track casework handled by the office.

  • Knowledge of issues and events in the district in which the Congressman is involved.


Work is mainly performed in an office environment.  Noise levels are usually moderate.

The Newton district office is accessible on public transit, though access to a car will enable greater opportunities for occasional out-of-office assignments with the Congressman and/or staff. 

Work requires a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends; however, this office values work/life balance and accommodations will be made to ensure time for rest, recharging, and self-care.
