Educational Americorps Positions working with Immigrant Youth

Oakland International High School is a public high school in Oakland, California that serves 100% refugee & immigrant students. We are dedicated to supporting our multilingual learners to not only acquire the English Language but to also further their academic skills and the tools they need to graduate high school and achieve future success in college and career. We also understand how challenging this may be if we also do not provide and support the wraparound needs of our students and families as they transition into their new U.S. schools and homes.

We are a dynamic, diverse organization dedicated to educational equity, social justice, and immigrant rights. In partnership with BAYAC, we are seeking SIX Americorps positions to join our dedicated team of professionals for a year-long term, supporting our literacy, tutoring, social services, wellness and student support needs:

Student Support Americorps Member (1 position)

Goal: To provide support, mentoring and connections to school-based services for OIHS’s newly-arrived immigrant students, and support student engagement through school-wide events and new student orientations

Key Responsibilities

  1. Help register and orient newly-arrived students to the school (providing school tours, teaching students how to use their email and lockers, and connecting students to the library and wellness resources)
  2. Supporting and receiving students daily in the office
  3. Connecting students with technology needs and facilitating access throughout the school year
  4. Connecting students with COVID vaccines, COVID test kits, and facilitating access along with the Wellness Team
  5. Pushing into classrooms to provide instructional assistance with students on an as needed basis
  6. Provide home-work and school-work help through small group tutoring in the library during class pull-outs and after school as part of the after-school program
  7. Plan and implement after-school student activities to enrich the student body
  8. Managing and maintaining student data systems to inform planning and decision-making
  9. Perform clerical duties such as making copies, scoring papers, recording data, prepare and maintain files as assigned.

Academic Support Americorps Members (4 positions)

Goal: To provide academic support, mentoring and tutoring OIHS’s newly-arrived immigrant students, supplementing support during school hours and after school

Key Responsibilities

  1. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to support students with limited and/or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) and assisting students with class assignments
  2. Provide home-work and school-work help through small group tutoring in the library during class pull-outs and after school as part of the after-school program
  3. Plan and implement after-school student activities to enrich the student body
  4. Provide support to teachers by setting up work areas and displays, operating audio-visual equipment, distributing papers and supplies
  5. Gather and provide data that will be used by teachers, staff and researchers to assess students and teaching methods used in the classroom/school
  6. Communicate expectations, provide guidance and show an active interest in student progress while striving to develop a rapport and serve as a positive role model for students and others.
  7. Perform clerical duties such as making copies, scoring papers, recording data, prepare and maintain files as assigned.
  8. Attend and actively participate in staff and OIHS Learning Lab professional development meetings and retreats.

Extended Learning & Volunteer Coordinator Member (1 position)

Goal: To provide support, mentoring, and expanded connections to school-based services and enrichment opportunities for OIHS’s newly-arrived immigrant students, and support student engagement through school-wide events, support new student orientations and connections to caring volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Support students and staff with a Tuesday-Saturday work schedule
  2. Provide home-work and school-work help through small group tutoring in the library during class pull-outs/push-ins, after school, and during Saturday school
  3. Coordinate and facilitate enrichment opportunities and special programming for students throughout the year
  4. Support Saturday School team in design, development and outreach
  5. Support student access to internship, CTE, and internship programs
  6. Coordinate volunteer efforts for Saturday programs as needed
  7. Help orient newly-arrived students to the school (providing school tours, teaching students how to use their email and lockers, and connecting students to the library and wellness resources)
  8. Support with data entry and track work in case management database (Apricot 360)
  9. Support our school volunteer program with volunteer intakes, communication and scheduling

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL POSITIONS:

  • Commitment to and interest in working with diverse immigrant communities in an educational context; Interest in and dedication to educational equity, social justice and immigrant rights
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively engage and support adolescents, in both group and individual settings
  • Strong organizational capacity and the ability to effectively plan and coordinate projects with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a busy, dynamic environment; flexible to immediately pivot when priorities change
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively
  • Commitment to the Americorps program; ability to commit to a full year of service
  • Submit application to BACR and attend all trainings and team days with Americorps
  • Negative Result on tuberculosis test
  • LiveScan background check clearance
  • Fully vaccinated against Covid-19

Level of Language Proficiency

Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • At least 17 years old
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week) and commit to an 11 month term of service
  • Successful completion of TB test and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
  • Prefer to have 48 college credits completed, not required
