Lab Manager, the Suicide Prevention Intervention Lab

The Suicide Prevention Intervention Lab at the James J Peters VAMC (Bronx) and Icahn School Medicine at Mt. Sinai, directed by Dr. Marianne Goodman, is seeking a full-time lab manager for a multi-year position to begin around July 2021. The lab investigates the efficacy of suicide safety planning interventions for Veterans. There are several ongoing interventions focusing on (1) telehealth groups, (2) dyad treatments and (3) lethal means safety. The lab manager will work on multiple studies, including a 5-year study based at the JJPVA titled ‘Project Life Force.’

The successful candidate must be flexible and able to multitask, balancing multiple projects and lab management duties with excellent organizational and communication skills (in person and over email, phone). This person must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, be skilled at working with other people and advising on project decisions as well as be able to make independent decisions to help move projects forward.

The lab manager will work closely with the PI, participate in all aspects of the research process, and have the potential to co-author posters and manuscripts and attend conferences.

Duties: Work closely with PIs to manage regulatory documents across sites such as IRB preparation and submission (e.g., continuing reviews, yearly progress reports) and to assist in future grant submissions (VA agencies, AFSP). Conduct manualized clinical research group sessions focusing on safety planning. Digitally organize lab activities. Cultivate a positive lab culture. Supervise Bachelor-level research assistants in data collection, entry, and preliminary analysis. Opportunity to collaborate on publications.

Skills: Excellent interpersonal, psychotherapy and organizational skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite. Experience with SPSS, REDCap, Qualtrics or other statistical software for designing experiments and performing statistical analyses a plus.

Additional qualifications include excellent interpersonal skills especially working with underserved populations; strong organizational abilities and self-motivation; problem solving abilities both independently and collaboratively; understanding and experience of psychology in order to contribute to conceptual discussions and research papers; demonstrated interest in treatment development, and high attention to detail.

Experience: Background and interest in clinical research including participation assessing or interviewing Veterans in treatment-related studies of suicide prevention (either within a group or dyad setting). 2+ years obtaining intake evaluations or delivering evidence-based psychosocial interventions (e.g., DBT, CBT) to persons with mental health or other neuropsychiatric disorders preferably within a mental health setting. Research experience in an academic or mental health setting required. Prior experience in VA setting a plus.

Education: Master’s in social work or mental health counseling or PhD in psychology. Licensing in this field preferred, but not required. The successful candidate will also serve as an interventionist on these treatment protocols.

Hours/Compensation: 5 days per week. Salary commensurate with experience. Needs to be able to commit at least 2-3 years (minimum) to the project.
