The CL position provides a unique and exciting opportunity to join a team of experienced felony and homicide prosecutors, legal support staff, and detective investigators who are working together to enhance transparency, strengthen public trust in the criminal justice system, and engage and collaborate with external stakeholders and partners. This position will be based in New York City and report to the OSI Bureau Chief.

Responsibilities of the CL will include but not be limited to the following:

  • As an integral member of the OSI team, collaborating with OSI attorneys, social workers, detectives, and legal support staff on investigations and prosecutions, including crafting recommendations and navigating community relationships.
  • Working closely with OSI, Communications, Policy, and Intergovernmental Affairs teams to develop and implement outreach strategies to engage with external stakeholders on issues of policing best practices, police-community relations, interaction between police and other institutions, and community safety.
  • Building and maintaining productive relationships with community members/leaders, organizations, public officials, law enforcement agencies, and other interested stakeholders.
  • Staying current on emerging issues, shifting dynamics and other updates to the landscape and sharing this information in regular reports/presentations.
  • Developing metrics and other tracking systems to measure and assess the success/impact of outreach strategies/programs, providing suggestions for improvement and executing approved adjustments.
  • Preparing fact sheets, talking points, educational resources, presentations, and other materials.
  • Attending and coordinating meetings, visits and other outreach events/activities.

Qualifications

  • At least four (4) years of community organizing, policy, government and/or legal advocacy experience is required.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of the issues and politics surrounding policing reform, criminal justice reform, and racial justice. An existing connection/relationship to the organizations and coalitions currently working on these issues in New York State and nationally is also desired.
  • Forward thinking and proactive with a proven record of building/establishing relationships, trust, credibility and goodwill with a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to understand and convey complex information effectively to a range of audiences.
  • Capable of working well independently or in a team, superior organizational skills and the ability to self-manage time/deadlines while also balancing priorities.
  • Highly professional with sound judgement; must manage confidential information and emotionally charged situations/interaction with discretion, integrity and sensitivity.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel) and social media platforms.
