$30 an hour at 35 hours a week

The Mayor and the Chancellor are committed to giving every three- and four-year-old in New York City access to high-quality, full-day early childhood education. Research has shown that pre-kindergarten for three- and four-year-olds can increase student achievement and success over the long term. Every student in NYC deserves the opportunity to experience these benefits, and gain the skills and knowledge pre-K and 3-K can provide.

As part of the city’s vanguard Pre-K and 3-K for All initiatives, the Division of Early Childhood’s Expansion Team works to ensure access to these programs for three- and four-year-olds. This year alone, over 60,000 children are enrolled in 3-K and Pre-K for All, and we are excited to help even more participate in the coming years.

The Expansion Consultant will support the team through a mix of engaging with external stakeholders (e.g., principals, superintendents) and project planning. This is a great role for someone who wants to gain experience in education and public administration.

Role Responsibilities

  • The Expansion Consultant role will evolve over time, depending on the cycles of key work streams. The ideal candidate will be a flexible team player who thrives in an all-hands-on-deck, collaborative environment. Specific responsibilities may include:
  • Managing and tracking communications with key stakeholders (e.g., superintendent teams, principals, field leadership) through regular meetings, emails, conference calls, and other touch-points
  • Building relationships with principals, superintendents, and internal stakeholders to support the creation of new early childhood classes
  • Developing key documents and communications for leadership and other critical internal and external stakeholders
  • Supporting planning for special programming (e.g., special education, dual language) and other project planning (e.g., site readiness, school budget allocations)
  • Working in partnership with other teams to make recommendations on strategic projects (e.g., balancing the portfolio of pre-K and 3-K seats across schools based on a citywide analysis of demand, the supply of seats, and budget allocations)

 Required Qualities and Skills

The ideal candidate for the Expansion Consultant role will demonstrate the following qualities and skills:

  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Openness to managing operations
  • Ability to push forward multiple, complex projects simultaneously
  • Leadership in taking initiative to foster meaningful relationships
  • Customer service orientation, including patience and poise with confused or frustrated stakeholders
  • Ability to adapt, stay focused, and maintain composure when working on tight timelines in changing circumstances
  • Willingness to take on new projects, as needed, with enthusiasm
  • Ability and willingness to travel to meetings in schools across NYC’s 32 community school districts

Term of Employment, Reporting Structure, and Pay Rate

The role is a consultancy for approximately 6 months, with the possibility of extension. The pay rate for this role is $30 an hour at 35 hours a week. This role is not eligible for benefits (i.e., health insurance, parental leave, retirement) except for paid sick days.
