California Volunteers, Office of the Governor is the state office tasked with engaging Californians in service, volunteering, and civic action.

Since 2020, California Volunteers has launched Governor Newsom’s California Climate Action Corps, the country’s first statewide climate corps program, #CaliforniansForAll service initiative launched in response to COVID-19 to establish a volunteer corps to support the state’s response to emergencies and disasters, and Operation Feed California, a volunteer program created to stabilize California food bank operations. As part of Governor Newsom’s California Comeback Plan, California Volunteers received a $400 million investment in service to expand and create new programs.

Led by the state’s Chief Service Officer, Josh Fryday, California Volunteers is supported by a bipartisan 25-member Commission and a team of experts driven by a mission to empower and mobilize all Californians to volunteer and serve in their communities.

Position Description:

The CaliforniansForAll College Program Director will lead and support the design, development, startup and implementation of the Governor and California Volunteers new $146 million College Service Program. The program will:

·      Provide a pathway to debt-free college for low-income students

·      Build social cohesion among student participants and the community through meaningful shared experiences (Member Experience Pilot 2021-22)

·      Address community challenges

·      Create civic-minded leaders who can bridge divides and solve problems

·      Tailor service toward students’ academic curriculum while encouraging timely completion, matriculation, graduate school, job placement

·      6500 students (1250 Dreamers) will earn $10,000 between a stipend and Education award.

This is a Governor Appointed position that will be part of California Volunteers Leadership Team. This is a new program and there may be staff to supervise.

Duties:

Program Design Support

·      Lead and support the design, development, and implementation of California Volunteer’s new College Program.

·      Collaborate, cultivate and manage relationships with higher education partners including UC, CSU, Community College and private universities.

·      Build and foster relationships with Mayors, key elected officials, nonprofit partners, state agency partners, and community leaders to obtain their support of the program.

·      Strong strategic communications skills: confidence, credibility and ability to work as a peer with partners on developing objectives, content themes, strategy and execution plans.

·      Lead and manage project timeline

·      Work collaboratively and transparently with internal teams to ensure alignment on priorities and goals

·      Set a strong foundation for upholding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion across programs to create and support a highly diverse program

·      Support marketing and communications related to program recruiting

·      Maintain exceptionally high brand standards in all activities and communication, especially as it relates to stakeholder engagement on behalf of the organization

·      Lead, design and support program reporting that tracks the organization’s impact for ongoing improvement as well as grant reporting and donor relations

·      Be an agile, flexible team member that manages administrative tasks, organizational events, marketing efforts, and community partnerships as needed

·      Collaborate with team on Member Experience Pilot Program

Qualifications:

·      Outstanding interpersonal and public speaking skills to represent the organization with both internal and external audiences. Ability to work effectively in a dedicated, mission and team-oriented office environment.

·      Mission-driven, highly organized, creative, and self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while being able to work under short deadlines, and deliver in a rapidly changing, fast-paced office environment.

·      Ability to learn and apply new skills

·      Ability to provide feedback and follow up on tasks

·      Knows when to act independently and when to consult for advice on decision-making.

·      Understanding of Higher Education systems/segments

·      Project Management skills

·      Program Design skills

·      Ability to work extended hours

·      Bachelor’s Degree

Location and Travel

·      Position is currently partly remote but will eventually be located in the Sacramento area.

·      Some travel required. For local/regional travel, valid California Class C Driver license and valid automobile insurance needed or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
