Who We Seek

An experienced and strategic thinker to work collaboratively on a new comprehensive grant program through research and proposal development, writing, management, and reporting for federal and state grant programs on behalf of TJCOG and local governments. The candidate must feel comfortable coordinating projects across multiple internal and external stakeholder groups, synthesizing complex or analytic information into high-quality and clear proposals, and serve as a resource of information on grant programs and requirements.

Description of Work

The Grant Specialist is part of a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary organization engaged in long-term, regional-scale issues and shorter-term local government assistance integrating TJCOG’s focus areas of aging and human services, community & economic development, housing, natural resources and resilience, strategy and innovation, and transportation and mobility. The position is responsible for writing competitive grant proposals and letters of inquiry that are reflective of federal and state funding priorities, identifying applicable funding sources, establish strong relationships with granting agencies, and managing reporting for successfully awarded grants.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The Grant Specialist must have thorough knowledge of federal and state government funding mechanisms, submission guidelines, and grant portals; grant management methods including, but not limited to, development, budgeting, tracking, and reporting; and project management. The grant coordinator must be able to communicate effectively and in oral and written forms, establish and maintain effective working relationships, synthesize highly technical and/or complex information, and simultaneously manage a suite of grant proposals and deadlines. Independent judgment and initiative, with limited supervision, and independent project management is required in the performance of duties. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required.

Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Communication, English, Political Science, Urban and Regional Planning, or a related field, a minimum of three (3) years of federal and state grant writing and administration experience, and a track record of successfully funded grant applications

Preferred: Master’s degree in Communication, English, Political Science, Urban and Regional Planning, or a similar field. North Carolina experience. Experience working with low-income populations

Starting Salary & Benefits

Hiring range: $45,858

(Employee will be eligible for a 5% increase after serving a 6-month probation period.)
